Turning the Tables at Reagan Library

This will not exactly come as a surprise announcement for any Ricochet members, but I’ll filling in for Peter Robinson on his Uncommon Knowledge program at a special taping this Sunday at 4PM at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. My special guest will be the fellow who penned Reagan’s “tear down this wall” speech, the same Peter Robinson.

That historic address was delivered 30 years ago, and that will be the focus of my time with Peter. However, I expect our conversation will take some twists and turns before I ask “one last question.” My research has dug up some pretty exciting stuff, including his stint as a bullfighter in Tijuana and his failed attempt to open a nationwide chain of marionette repair shops.

If there are any questions you would (seriously) like asked of Peter, now is the time to let me know. I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to work them into our short time together, but, if I do, you’ll receive absolutely no credit. I know hundreds of Ricochet members will be in attendance, and I look forward to saying hello at a post-taping reception at the library.

Peter has kindly offered to drive me to Simi Valley for the event. It should be no trouble spotting his car. The vanity plate reads, TDTW.

Since you ask, I do have a question for Robinson: How did he let himself get talked into this?

I believe red wine was involved.

What is the proper etiquette for Palo Alto denizen while sporting a casual sweater draping over one’s shoulder? Left over right, or right over left, or just a bold arms hanging down straight?

Customers hate buying something with so many strings attached.

    Olé!

    How about this one, Pat?

Would it be better to “build the wall” internally by doing things like: severe penalties for companies hiring Illegals, removing birthright citizenship, immediate deportation (and removal of path to citizenship) upon apprehension of Illegals, and so on, or should we concentrate on building the physical wall? No fair answering “why not both?”

How does Peter stay sane while maintaining friendships with both relentless pessimists (like Mark Steyn and Victor Davis Hanson) and dogged optimists (like Larry Kudlow and Rob Long)?

Where does America’s hope lie? In assertive legislative and gubernatorial actions by the states? In proactive or repealing commitments by the US Congress under President Trump? Or in some less directly political activity, such as economics or religious revival?

Where’s the book? If not a treatise on the Cold War, what’s next? And would you trust @andrewklavan as your ghostwriter?

Okay, seriously. Through all the interviews Peter has done, I’m sure some stand out as delightful and informative. I would like to know, however, if there was an interview that stood out because it surprised you, disappointed you, offended you, or any other outcome that was difficult. (I’d ask about the most delightful and/or informative, but he’s probably been asked that a number of times.)

“I believe red wine was involved.”

I assumed this was an assigned penance from a recent Confessional.

How about the feds use the money they withhold from Sanctuary Cities to build the wall?

How about a new speech? “Mr. Mueller, abandon this Russian Investigation farce!” (This investigation makes the Scooter Libby investigation look almost legit by comparison).

My question “A light rail train leaves San Francisco at 4PM heading south.  another light rail train leaves Sacramento at 4PM, heading north.  At the time the pass one another, how many billions of dollars will have been wasted to provide affordable public transport?”

Yeah buddy, great one! Don’t forget “how many more billions will be wasted on maintenance on the ‘affordable’ public transport?”

2.5 times as many as initially projected.

Mr. McQuire takes Peter’s arm and steers him down the hall toward the back of the house and out through the back door.

EXT. ROBINSON BACKYARD AND POOL AREA – NIGHT

The pool is eerily lit. There are FOUR PEOPLE standing and TALKING, drinks in their hands, at the back of the yard.

    MR. MCQUIRE

Peter – I just want to say one word to you – just one word –

    PETER

    Yes, sir.

    MR. MCQUIRE

    Are you listening?

    PETER

    Yes I am.

    MR. MCQUIRE

    (gravely)

    Marionettes.

They look at each other for a moment.

    PETER

    Exactly how do you mean?

    MR. MCQUIRE

There is a great future in marionette repair. Think about it. Will you think about it?

    PETER

    Yes, I will.

    MR. MCQUIRE

Okay. Enough said. That’s a deal. Oh, and get an MBA while you’re at it. You’ve got a good head for business. I can see that.

What I’m waiting to hear, Mr. Sajak, is how many last questions you’re going to ask him. I’ll be disappointed by any number less than six.

Question is unanswerable as stated. For them to pass one another the light rail line will have to be completed, an obvious impossibility.

    Serious Question:

Mr. Robinsion, we all know that California is a basket case, in terms of state taxes and in terms of regulation. Why do you still live there?

Are there ever questions you’d really like to ask an interviewee but you simply can’t?

Do you ever have guests who will sit for Uncommon Knowledge but not The Ricochet Podcast, or the other way around?

Also, they would have had to circumnavigate the globe since Sacramento is north of San Francisco.

No need to buy a vowel for that one…So looking forward to enjoying this! My question: How did Uncommon Knowledge get its start? Thanks for sitting in, Mr. Sajak!
