Maternal Inadequacy and a Musical Son
I’m not a music person. I’m just not. Yes, I used to play the piano. Still do, when I happen across one, but otherwise? I barely even listen to music on the radio anymore.
I wouldn’t have said that my children’s dad was especially musical either, yet somehow we managed to produce Peter. Who has been working on, working with, working toward music — specifically the drums — since he was about 11 years old.
Is he any good at it? I don’t know. Even when I do listen to the radio, I listen to classical (specifically Baroque). Left to my own devices, I would never listen to whatever it is that Peter’s band does … though when I go to hear his band play, I am mesmerized. All the wild energy that made Peter a difficult boy to have in the house or for that matter in one’s uterus (he was always Peter, right from the get-go!) make him compelling on stage — unless that’s just maternal devotion talking?
So many of you, dear Ricochetti, know about music. So I figured I’d provide this link to the band’s web page, and maybe those with ears to hear will understand him as his mother can’t.
Oh, by the way — there are two guys who look like Jesus in the band. Mine is the taller Jesus.

Kate I am also musically disinclined, so please forgive me for asking this here- will we see you on a future episode of North Woods Law? I chanced across the show a few weeks ago, and for all I know it could be 5 or 10 years old. But when I saw it was about Maine Game Wardens I immediately started hoping I’d see you.
I’m on some of the episodes. There’s one called “Ice Out” where there’s a fair quantity of screen-time for yours truly, most of it embarrassing. The show was on for five years, and we just stopped allowing Animal Planet to follow us around, filming. It was a big hit! And did a lot for recruitment and boosting the general awareness of conservation law enforcement. But it was a little tiring for the, um, stars (of which I was not one).
Tell the women in your life that Chris McCabe is married. So back off!
I know, because I married him myself.
Is this the second Mr. Kate or are you a polyandrist?
It would be the third… but what I meant was that I officiated at his wedding!

His mates seem like serious musicians, so I’m guessing that he’s good. Tell him that he can be a tall Ginger Baker.
I will be making my annual pilgrimage to Cape Elizabeth and the Lobster Shack in a few weeks and will see if the band is playing around Portland.
I can’t tell you how long I’ve waited for an opportunity to, as they say, melt my brain through my nose…

I’ve known all but one of those boys since they were little kids. The lead singer (Jesus #2) is new to the pack, but the rest have been playing together forever.
I am the only one in my entire extended family who is remotely musical. Knowing how to play a musical instrument is a great pastime. Ray and I were introduced by a mutual friend because we were both musicians. We have been married for nearly 14 years. Our friend doesn’t invite us to her parties anymore, because of that.
I supported. Reminds me a bit of the stuff I heard in Seattle in the 90’s.
Plus, my own son is getting into the drums. But he’s only 4, so we’ll have to wait a while to see where the road takes him.

Musically talented children are a delight! Three of ours can play various instruments and it has been a pleasure to attend their performances over the decades. None of them does music as their profession however, but they still love playing things. As my youngest (also named Peter, and he’s pretty good on drums, too) told me once: “Music is better than football, Mom. See–someday you have to stop playing football, but you can play music your whole life!”
Keep enjoying your Peter’s talents. It’s obvious he enjoys them.
I am listening to one of their YouTube offerings now. It sounds to me like they have serious chops, particularly Peter and the guitar player. The singer is probably okay too, but they always over-mike them and I end up listening around them. (I don’t hate all vocalists — it’s 90-95%, tops.)
My mom used to warn me about polyandrists on the internet (at least I think it was polyandrists – I wasn’t really paying attention). Be careful out there folks!

Two Lights by the Lobstah Shack (not the state park) is one of my favorite places anywhere.
I couldn’t play the video on the website, so I went to YouTube and played the first song that come up – “Isabella.” This song, at least, is modern progressive rock which is exceedingly difficult to play well, particularly for drummers. Some of the best rock drummers have worked in this genre. A few years ago I saw Porcupine Tree at Radio City Music Hall, and their drummer was phenomenal. Most rock fans are familiar with Neil Peart, the drummer for Rush. I’m sure your son is a fan.
My assessment, as a musician myself: Your son is an excellent player. I did not care for the singer on this song, however.
I dig it. The song in the Indiegogo pitch reminds me of Queensryche — prog rock, but mainstream enough to gain traction with a wider audience.
Listening to the YouTube songs. Prog rock is not my favorite, but I think these guys are good and enjoy listening to them. They play together really tightly.
I actually like the singer, at least on the tracks here. Those high-pitched vocals are reminding me a bit of Jeff Buckley. (I can’t figure out if the lyrics match the quality of the music, though.)

They have chops, and they must be rehearsing well. Glad to have the chance to hear them.
That is a bit of an issue with me. If you’re going somewhere, get there. But then again, I listen to jazz cuts that go on for 7-8 minutes.
