You Learn Something Nouveau Every Day

Dear Peter,

I’ve been a fan for a long time and a listener of your podcast for years! I hope it is not out of line, but one should clearly pronounce the ”N” in ”Le Pen”! Otherwise, it sounds like ”le pain” (”the bread” as you know)! Otherwise, I find your French to be quite good.

I should note that I am not a fan of Marine Le Pen, but I know how it is pronounced because I lived in France for five years, during which time I married my (French) wife of 12 years.

Best,

Seth Jentner

Also not to be confused with French professional wrestler: Le Pain, best known as the only wrestler to tap out before the match started.

That guy had a hell of a life. He’s the real French hero.

Okay, toss-up between him and French Fries.

I’ve never studied French, I don’t know any French, I don’t know any French men or women (though I work with a French Canadian).  And some may find it to be “hi brow” when someone pronounces a French word or name the way the French pronounce it.  I used to think so.  Until I started following the World Endurance Championship, the gold star event of which is the “24 heures du mans”, or 24 hours of Le Mans.  Now, some people call it “luh mons”, and some “lay mans”, but the French seem to pronounce it “lay moe”.  So that’s how I say it.  Because it may seem high brow to do so, it is decidedly low brow to call it “lay mans”.
