James Comey: No Pressure

Here will be your non-covered story of the day: It has been claimed that former FBI director Comey wrote a memo last February that says President Trump pressured him to drop the investigation into Michael Flynn.

However, On May 3 he told a Senate Committee under oath that he had never faced political pressure to shut down an investigation. Here’s the exchange between Comey and Sen. Mazie Hirono (D–HI):

HIRONO: So if the Attorney General or senior officials at the Department of Justice opposes a specific investigation, can they halt that FBI investigation?

COMEY: In theory yes.

HIRONO: Has it happened?

COMEY: Not in my experience. Because it would be a big deal to tell the FBI to stop doing something that — without an appropriate purpose. I mean where oftentimes they give us opinions that we don’t see a case there and so you ought to stop investing resources in it. But I’m talking about a situation where we were told to stop something for a political reason, that would be a very big deal. It’s not happened in my experience.

Now, you can parse that as saying, well, Trump’s not an official at the DOJ. As President, he is the executive head of every department.

. . .  you have to believe that the Director of the FBI was willing to lie while under oath before the Congress, a Felony that usually results in prison time unless your last name is Clinton, . . .

    Or Clapper.

    Or Koskinen.

    Or Lerner.

    Or Holder.

The comments of “off the record,” “anonymous sources,” “high level sources” or any other such nonsense should be thrown out–by everyone. I’ve never seen such a deluge of non-identified sources, and I’ve reached the point that if a person won’t go on the record, I toss it out–and them with it (if I could)!

This is how they work and social media, especially Twitter runs with it – it’s really bad. This was a decent, balanced story this morning:

Very good article. The only concern I have is that anonymous officials were quoted. I understand the reason for that, but I have a similar issue with the hysterical stories. At least the information is presented in a more balanced way, as you indicate.

I’m at the same place. If the “information” can’t be attributed to a verifiable source, then it cannot be assumed to be true (from either side.)
