Time for Bed

“But I don’t want to!” she cried petulantly, “It’s still day. See? The sun is still up!”

The litany of children with proper bedtimes in summer time. I can understand, as I was one of those children once upon a time, as were many of the Ricochetti I am sure. To go to bed to the sounds of… well… no one says it quite like Robert Louis Stevenson, now do they?

Bed in Summer

In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle-light.
In summer, quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day.

I have to go to bed and see
The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people’s feet
Still going past me in the street.

And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day?

The expectation that you just might miss something while you sleep is always something that children struggle with, but even more so in summer when the world still feels quite awake and active. And especially if you have friends who get to stay up and are outside playing, how can one get to sleep?

I see many parallels to Ricochet. I have enjoyed participating in the conversations here and look forward to doing so again, but it is time to put my conversation to bed for summer. I know there will be things I miss as my friends continue to play, but my children demand art and building projects, science experiments, reading and cooking lessons.

I look forward to my return when the days grow shorter and my children start school once more.

Good night, Ricochet.

Enjoy your Rico-break and more importantly, your children while they are still at that “special age.”

Just don’t forget to come back to rejoin our little coffee klatch in the fall – please.

I loved summertime with my kids. We had so much fun.

I live in a summer resort place, and my favorite scenes are the long lines of families getting ice cream cones and the happy kids arriving Sunday nights running down to the beach, so excited to be “on vacation”!

    Happy Summer!

May G-d bless you and your kids with a happy summer.   We will be happy when you return to help us celebrate the conservative victories of Team Trump.
