With One Eye on the News…

What’s more depressing: that the normalization of Hillary is entering its 25th year? Or the fact that something called “Evan McMullin” is so stridently insisting that what the nation needs right now is a whole lot more Evan McMullin?

We’re living in a news junkie’s paradise. It’s like the 70s again, except with “developments” instead of heroin. In an effort to carve out an intellectual existence outside the sphere of politics I’ve been only perusing the news, missing out on all but the biggest stories: Brexit official, the Russian hack; the subway attack in St. Petersburg; chemical weapons deployed in Syria and the tangled web we call the “intelligence community.” With regard to this last, I find the relationship between the FBI, the NSA, Justice, the Defense Intelligence Agency and countless similar agencies entirely incomprehensible. All I know is that my philosophy is now “email as if no one is watching.”

I’m only just now finishing the digestion of Trump’s election. But now, with five months to digest the meaning of it all, I think I’m beginning to get a handle on the general forces that landed him his dream job. It wasn’t a Flight 93 election so much as it was my Tahiti Nui Flight 55 with non-stop service to Los Angeles in which my seat failed to recline. (Note to editor: flesh this out for me. Thx!)

Meanwhile, it looks like Obamacare — like Ryan Seacrest and just as unfortunately — is here to stay. Apparently in order to make it go away Republicans require control of the House, the Senate, the Executive, and their own bladders. Obamacare won’t be the last entitlement we can’t afford, of course. But thanks to the looming fiscal crisis we soon we won’t be able to afford even a government shutdown. The GOP is in such disarray that even if we could afford a government shutdown I don’t trust the Republican leadership not to screw it up.

Meanwhile we’re treated daily to the tears of internationalists bemoaning the fact that Brexit is now a reality. Making matters worse, my sources tell me Great Britain Brexited via text message. Frankly, I think an intervention for the EU is in order, one that would hammer home the message “The United Kingdom is just that not that into you.”

And as long as we’re on Twitter, I’ll leave you with this from @tinynietzsche.

    Nice work, Mr Deeble.

Admit it, you love drinking the tears of the Internationalists. There’s no shame in it.

Well, the AHCA issue is a bit more complicated, since there are a lot of Republicans who take their Coolidge membership seriously and seem to believe that we can still eliminate SS, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Federal role in overall population health care (“This is setting up yet another entitlement that is not spelled out in the Constitution!”- Amash or Meadows, or whoever).

It does seem like the 70’s again. We have a heroin epidemic, pot is legal many places, horrible fashion, abortion still an issue, and Watergate all over again. I will say the music was better then than now.  History repeats itself as they say, and it seems to be doing that all at once. Heard a weird story that now Spain is having a problem with Britain – what the heck, like we don’t have enough world problems?

By the way, the picture you chose is hilarious!

I have a similar philosophy when it comes to walking outside in my untied bathrobe.

Having seen what the various agencies are capable of, my philosophy has become, “Email as though everyone is watching.”
