Malibu Declared Sanctuary City to Protect Immigrants Cheap Labor

Malibu is home to gorgeous beaches, great surfing, and lots of celebrities. It’s also one of the most progressive cities around. To signal their liberal virtue, city hall has decided to make the ‘Bu a sanctuary city. Because who else will tend Malibu’s gardens for far less than minimum wage?

Malibu becomes a sanctuary city — in solidarity with its gardeners, cooks and others in the U.S. illegally

The idea was inspired by one of the town’s many famous residents: actor Martin Sheen. In December, he grabbed the lectern during a City Council meeting and — as if conjuring his inner President Josiah Bartlet from “The West Wing” — urged the city to become a sanctuary city.

Like many sanctuary city resolutions, Malibu’s is largely symbolic. Backers said the move, which passed on a 3-2 council vote, is a chance for Malibu’s privileged to stand up for the city’s vulnerable population.

Very selfless of them to protect their exploited, underpaid servant pool.

Malibu is about 92% white and one of L.A. County’s wealthiest cities. Everyone agrees the city has workers who are not authorized to be in the United States, and they tend to serve the food at upscale eateries, clean the beachside mansions, look after children and keep the landscaping looking lush.

Lifelong Malibu resident Mikke Pierson, 57, a supporter of the resolution, said it’s hard to imagine a Malibu without the many immigrants who toil there. That why expressing support for people who are in the country illegally is so important, he said.

“Heck … we would be paralyzed and no one’s houses would be cleaned,” the former surf shop owner said.

Juan Escobar, an illegal immigrant who lives in Compton but works in Malibu cheered the sanctuary city designation. “In each house, there’s one immigrant here. You see Spanish speakers taking care of babies in every house.”

Councilwoman Laura Rosenthal agreed. “Our city depends on a Hispanic population to support our comfortable lifestyle,” she said. “Do we not owe them what comfort and protections that are possible in these challenging times?”

Though I agree that the wealthy of Malibu are going through challenging times, protecting their own comfort is their only goal.

I suspect that the only challenging times Malibu residents go through is when they discover there aren’t any toilet papers rolls left under the sink.

If big companies are bad for seeking cheaper labor, what does this make these people?  I mean, other than stinking hypocrites, obviously.

(edited for gramma – sheesh.  Apparently I was in a hurry).

    Jon,

Yes, the residents of Malibu hold to two basic principles.

    1. The open door must never be shut or even slightly restricted. Come one come all America is ever more diverse.
    2. Never pay minimum wage when you can have virtual slave labor.

It just makes me sigh. How inspiring.

    Regards,

    Jim

There is one reason only why illegals are cheaper labor than legal immigrants and natives: only law-abiding residents are subject to regulations.

Enforce immigration laws, stop teaching all kids in public schools to follow dreams and treating college degrees like tissue paper, rekindle apprenticeship opportunities, stop regulating every constructive impulse to death, and Americans will do the hard jobs for cheap.

The left is surprisingly open about their selfish motivations re: sanctuary cities. I would have expected them to hide behind compassion rather than announcing their self-interest. It’s not exclusively virtue signaling since they presumably don’t consider selfishness to be a virtue.

May they continue to be as open about their true motives, thereby leaving no doubt in anyone’s mind of what kind of people they are. Sure, many suspected it; now it is confirmed by the words out of their own mouths. Their cluelessness is astonishing.

Those who stand with ‘open borders’ and sanctuary city designations for their cities, should be required to unlock all gates to their property and doors to their homes. That, IMHO, is the only way these lib/progressive citizens can prove the seriousness of their conviction. Of course, they’ll never do that, but will create lines of word salad comments this common sense idea.

I’d love to see someone build a nice big public housing project right in the middle of Malibu and stuff it full of illegals.

Me too, We left in 1999 and never looked back. However, I do miss going to Dodger games and there are a couple of Mexican restaurants I miss. And Knott’s Berry Farm fried chicken.

Aren’t these Malibu folks the same people who are always clamoring for a living wage for low skilled workers? As previous comments have stated, the hypocrisy is stunning.

Don’t underestimate the value and comfort provided by an underclass that actually works.  Americans who’ve managed to work their way to the bottom do not provide the same value, skill and energy, not working is so much easier and rewarding for many citizens.  For those who can afford it, it provides  all the benefits of living in the third world but most things work better and there are fewer diseases and the traffic is less harrowing.    What could go wrong?

Listen, if you are attending two or three weekly rallies and prosocial planning meetings while fighting the good fight for gender equity in A List contracts, the costs for legal babysitting services for your two labradoodles can be crushing.

Maps to the Stars was too kind.

Not just Malibu brother. I think back on all the jobs I did when a young kid: cement, roofing, janitorial, lawn mowing, kitchen work. I never had to (nor could I have) competed with a man. Another aspect of what we’re (our kids, our country) losing by not controlling that damned border.

Jon, how can we make a movement out of this? This is one of the wealthiest cities in the nation. We need to get buses together and convince all the Illegals across the nation to go there and be “protected”. I think this could be America’s solution! Malibu has enough money to build housing and provide food for these folks. According to the Leftists, there are only 11 million of them here, so We could make it happen!

The city’s land area only about 20 square miles, but maybe California could donate some of the next-door Santa Monica National Recreation Area land to Malibu. Adding on a small section of that land, I think 11 million would fit nicely! We could probably fit a few hundred into Martin Sheen’s house alone!

Let’s see, I’ve got $32 bucks on me at the moment, people, we can make this happen.

You can actually sort of make this happen.  Not all to Malibu, but to sanctuary cities in general.  A few years back some state passed a law about illegals (I want to say GA but I’m totally not sure), and saw them immediately start moving out of state.  If all of the non-sanctuary cities say that not only will they cooperate with ICE, but will actively seek out illegals and report them to ICE, you’ll see them concentrate in those safe zones.  Could be a start.

In essence, ‘I’m alright, Jack,’ and bugger the hindmost.  These clowns make me ill.  The status quo suits them just fine as long as their beloved illegals don’t live in their neighborhoods and as long as is there are some other poor schmucks (us, mostly) who pay higher taxes to support the increased social, law enforcement, and infrastructure costs to maintain them in their precious bubbles.  Would High Priestess Warren say ‘You didn’t build this’ to he Malibu residents?

Those of you who still watch TV, and movies and pay for these people, I have to ask why?  Stop supporting them.  Not only will it stop the money flow, but your lives will improve.  There are better things to do than watch the tube, or go to movies.  Break you habit and go do them.

    It is illegal:

    • To employ an illegal alien.
    • To not purchase worker’s compensation insurance on “employees”.
    • To not withhold city, state and federal income taxes on “employees”.
    • To not pay the CA minimum wage to your “employees”.

I am sure the federal government and CA have a thousand other laws regarding employment that are being flouted by some of the fine citizens of Malibu.

Time to start arresting, charging and convicting some of these scofflaw employers who are “trying to skirt the law and avoid paying their fair share”.

I can just imagine the furor that would be caused if the illegal workers decided to unionize and strike for a “living wage”.

The worst thing that could ever happen to these workers is legalization. Give them a Green Card, and suddenly they’ll be unemployed – and most of them unemployable with no English, poor vernacular Spanish, and limited skills and education. Meanwhile, a whole new flood of illegal immigrants will be needed to work all day in the hot sun trimming Missy Streisand’s bushes for $20 under the table and a warm can of Coke…

    Pilli,

Ever think if 1/10th of the MSM had an ounce of integrity they’d do this story on National News a few times and the outcry would be heard all the way to Congress. Oh well, it’s that ounce of integrity requirement that eliminates this possibility.
