Pat Buchanan: Politics Can’t Fix This. It’s Going to Take A St. Paul

At the prompting of a Facebook friend, I just took a look at this interview with Pat Buchanan, which we recorded in March of 2012 to mark the 2011 publication of his book, Suicide of a Superpower. You know what? In the Age of Trump, it seems fresh and relevant and provocative all over again. If you have a few moments today — or perhaps you could bookmark this for the weekend — take a look.

The details would be boring, so let me limit myself to a one-word explanation: pneumonia.

A while back, I saw a talk by Buchanan on C-Span.  He said in 1968, he was talking with Eugene McCarthy who told him that George Romney didn’t need to be brainwashed (about Vietnam).  Just a light rinse will do the job.

Note: an edit on the year 2012 is in order on the second line.

And I was hoping we were hearing from the future (2102) where conservative thought had finally triumphed.

Funny thing, I’ve been binge watching a time travel show all day.  2102 didn’t even phase me.

You are getting up there, Peter.  Pneumonia is no joke at your age!  Bah hah hah!

Notice he was gone when we had a week of sunny weather in Northern California but now that it’s raining again, here he is.  “Pneumonia.”

    Smart man.

I like his point about global trade giving us sneakers made for $10 and sold for over $100. Since reading that the GOP was not always so opposed to tariffs, I’ve been meaning to research that history.

He skips past the more obvious solutions to the problem of American jobs being exported: severe deregulation and a tax revolution. But since I share his pessimism about America’s future, it doesn’t really matter.

You’ve got it all wrong. Conservatism doesn’t triumph until 2112.

For those that are in the market for a good quote, there’s a plethora in there!

One I took down was, “Men of intemperate minds can never be free:  Their passions form their fetters.” – Burke

My gosh, like a moth to the flame I’m charmed by that guy. Irresistible and infuriating. That rant beginning at 37:30 that runs like a freight train frm Afghanistan thru Burke to “those nut balls running thru the streets cuz somebody burned their holy book”  is classic Buchanan.

More classic Buchanan comes a minute later when he makes the case that those same nut balls and their intemperate minds can be trusted with nuclear weapons.

In any case, that interview was a load of fun. Great job, Peter.
