Or the people. All the celebrities on my twitter feed are freaking out and the truth is they could probably fund it out of their collective per diems.

ever seen a celebrity put his money where his mouth is?

Yes, there are celebrities who give to (certain, generally left wing) charities. But really. Actually spending the money they claim to want to spend? Never going to happen. Not that we shouldn’t regularly point out to them how stupid and hypocritical they are. Of course.

If it doesn’t contribute greatly to their professional image, like building houses in Haiti or New Orleans after a media-intensive disaster, it just ain’t worth it. You might as well ask ’em to contribute to the revitalization of the nation’s deteriorating sewer systems.

A few do.  Sandra Bullock has given away millions without publicity.

What is important to emphasize to progressive friends is that just because you cut the federal benefits to, say, “support for African business ventures” doesn’t mean that African business ventures can’t be supported. Indeed, they are being supported, by all sorts of entities, NGOs and, of course, the Chinese.

Not to mention, you know, their customers.

Kind of like this sort of publicity stunt pulled by a defense attorney in my town:  https://www.secondstreetlaw.com/single-post/2016/09/29/The-Tent-in-our-Yard

Of course, this was a specific response to some “tent cities” that had cropped up, which were basically gathering places for heroin and meth dealing and use, and more criminal activity than an OWS rally.  The idea that a criminal defense attorney should not understand the difference between soccer moms having picnics and the drug-induced “homeless” community is ridiculous.  In the final paragraph, they say they “want to be a part of a more compassionate solution.”  Not sure where “publicity stunt” fits into that scheme, but they did get some news articles out of the whole deal.

As I said, there are some.  But generally not the same ones who are standing up at the Oscars saying stuff like “WE ARE ALL MIGRANT WORKERS!”

Same caveat.  Those are the celebrities who hide under rocks but secretly hold conservative views.

I hate to see the affordable housing initiatives go and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness. The Legal Services Corporation does a lot of good work on Cape Cod.

Of course, the states should be doing all these things for themselves.

It’s scary that we have so many useless agencies designed solely to waste our money.

    Counsellor, don’t get scared.

I’m sorry, but almost none of these are going to be defunded. Every single one has a constituency that will lobby Congress for the continuation of the program.

If they were defunded they would have almost no effect on the budget.

The funny thing is, the phrase comes from something Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote three years before Marie Antoinette even moved to France.  He attributed the line to “a famous princess”. Also, it was pastry rather than cake.

This is a wonderful program but should have nothing to do with the Feds as it’s strictly run by locals.

Based on what comes out of their mouths and/or twitter feeds, celebrities already contribute a great deal to our nation’s sewer systems.

And that’s how we get dozens of agencies and budgets that amount to tens and hundreds of billions:  People respond to the name of the agency when you suggest we cut it, and say “How can you cut a food program for kids?”, etc.

When it’s not the federal government’s job to feed kids.  It’s the parents’ job.  And maybe their local school district, and the state, for larger programs.

But it’s not the job of some clownshow in DC, soaking up billions in program salaries while very, very little is actually distributed, and then in only the clumsiest and worst of fashions, because nobody in gov’t is ever accountable for the efficacy of these programs.

EverNobody is accountable.  Good, bad or catastrophic, the funding shall herefore unto eternity be deemed permanent.

Not sure what your comment means? Are we happy about all these going by the wayside? Is it because many can be picked up by private donations? I am not sure I’m understanding the cheer about it…

This is my main question: how do the budgets of these thing stack up against Trump’s desire for 58$B more military spending? Unless you gut the DoD, you’re just shifting the pork around.

He’s apparently good to go: He’s cutting other departments–State, HHS, whatever else–& defense spending is going to be budget neutral.

Has trump gone soft on his trade rhetoric? I thought we were gonna make American manufacturing great again and thus start increasing our exports so we would win on trade.
