Video: Trump Speaks to CPAC

President Trump delivered a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference Friday morning, a victorious return to the conference that helped launch his political career. This is his fifth appearance at CPAC. You can watch his entire speech below.

The reviews so far:

  • The press: Hated it.
  • The crowd: Loved it.

What did you think of the President’s speech?

So Trump’s CPAC speech is entirely composed of outsider rage against the “Establishment” and the media. From Trump, the media figure who is currently head of the party that controls all branches of the federal government and most state governments…

Ricochet was there!  With @davesussman, I can confirm the audience was pretty stoked.  Also, members of the press ended up sandwiched between the main crowd and overflow (seen behind us). When the President called out the fake news producers in the Press, there were loud jeers from the crowd, and sour looks on a lot of reporters.

Yeah, I am watching it right now.  The stuff about the media was pretty funny.  It’s obvious that he’s speaking off the cuff and just having fun.  I can respect that.

At the same time, he says “Bernie Sanders was right about trade.”

Yikes.  I guess I don’t care how much he yammers on about trade, but I sure hope he limits his actions on that stuff.

You guys have Press passes from Ricochet?

I am really excited for when one of you gets a question in at a white house presser.  :)  I sure hope you’re trying for that.

I’m still watching this thing.  Right now he’s just ranting.  That is obviously a strength of Trump’s.  Almost like cold-reading an audience.  But I think it’s equally a weakness.  A little organization and staying on track would probably be a good thing.  Dude is just pure stream-of-consciousness, which can get really hard to listen to.

That said, I think it is very clear that he is reading and listening to conservative pundits.  In that sense, I think it is very important for conservative pundits to both praise him and be critical.  If he’s reading us (haha, us… them) then there is the possibility that he will learn some important things.  Yes, I mean people like Mona and NR.  He’s repeating a lot of things that I’m hearing from our pundits, and that is great – he uses some zingers that are pretty effective.  But he needs to learn from his conservative critics.

I was unsurprised but disheartened by the crass narcissism of the entire thing. It’s all about how the press is unfair to him, writes critical stories of him, says fake things about him, has anonymous sources that he knows are fake. It’s not so much that the news is fake, its just that its news he doesn’t like. This is “Lyin’ Ted” applied to an entire industry.

I loved his speech at CPAC. What he lacks in eloquence he makes up for with personality. Also, he was well received at CPAC which was good. Glad to see Ricochet represented too. Anyone recognize you?

I did, but that’s probably not what you meant.

He’s always disappointing.  But there is obiously a method to his madness lost on conservatives like me who like substantive abstractions.  The democrats and press won’t relent, can’t be won by substantive arguments so he reminds us of the big mistake we all know to be true. His win.

Perhaps because he’s been one himself.

It’s entirely possible that anonymous sources say things that are untrue. It’s entirely likely. It is unlikely that reporters make up sources and fabricate quotes, because this is how you lose your job and your benefits and your economic and social status drops to nil. It happens (Janet Cooke, Stephen Glass) but those names stick out because it’s rare.

Miss on all counts. He is not a media figure who controls any aspect of the media. He clearly has not and still does not control the Republican party, and he is in a fight to the death with aspects of the entrenched bureaucracy.

I was able to obtain press credentials from CPAC on behalf of Ricochet.  I’m just a publicist, Dave is the real talent, and I’ll bet if he lived in D.C., he could get in on a WH presser at some point.
