Nikki Haley is trying to change the conversation in the UN

While we were all caught up in the big story of the day, Milo, Nikki Haley was at the UN. The UN Security Council held a meeting on the Middle East. Unsurprisingly the focus of the conversation is how Israel is bad.

Ms. Haley condemned the meeting and the bias of the Council. This should be a bigger deal. We have a UN Ambassador that is willing to represent the interests of the US and its allies. Ms. Haley is a strong improvement over Samantha Powers.

After attending her first regular meeting of the UN Security Council devoted to the Middle East, including the Palestinian-Israeli situation, Ambassador Haley remarked to reporters, “The first thing I want to do is talk about what we just saw in there.” Calling the meeting “a bit strange,” Ambassador Haley noted how the focus of blame for everything that has gone wrong in the Middle East seemed to be placed almost entirely on Israel.

“The discussion was not about Hezbollah’s illegal build-up of rockets in Lebanon,” Ambassador Haley said. “It was not about the money and weapons Iran provides to terrorists. It was not about how we defeat ISIS. It was not about how we hold Bashar al-Assad accountable for the slaughter of hundreds and thousands of civilians. No, instead, the meeting focused on criticizing Israel, the one true democracy in the Middle East. I am new around here, but I understand that’s how the Council has operated, month after month, for decades. I am here to underscore the ironclad support of the United States for Israel. I’m here to emphasize the United States is determined to stand up to the UN’s anti-Israel bias.”

Ambassador Haley was speaking against the backdrop of the anti-Israel Security Council Resolution 2334 passed last December, which the Obama administration refused to veto. “We will never repeat the terrible mistake of Resolution 2334 and allow one-sided Security Council resolutions to condemn Israel,” Ambassador Haley declared. “The outrageously biased resolutions from the Security Council and the General Assembly only make peace harder to attain by discouraging one of the parties from going to the negotiating table.”

How refreshing it is to hear such sincere words of support for Israel after eight years of Israel-bashing by the Obama administration. Former Ambassador Power had hypocritically mouthed some formulaic acknowledgements of bias against Israel in the Security Council and other UN forums, but while contributing strongly to that bias herself.

Whether you like Trump or not, Ms. Haley was a very good choice for UN Ambassador. I hope that the corruption and/or hypocrisy of the UN in other areas will be in her mind in the future.

This could be a template for what we have all been saying:

Whether you like Trump or not, _____________ was a very good choice for _______________.

    For example:

Whether you like Trump or not, James Mattis was a very good choice for Secretary of Defense.

    See how this works?

I think it is made better by the fact that Ms. Haley did not in any way support Trump in the Primary.

He is willing, at least sometimes, to take good people that he was fighting with previously and put them is spots where they can do good.

I think it’s hard to know how much that really matters until the rubber meets the road – when she contradicts or pushes back against Trump’s policies because she believes them to be wrong.

She makes her case. He accepts it or rejects it. If he rejects it and there is a principle involved, she resigns.  Probably he then praises her, unless she has gone public and attacked him. At that point, all bets are off.

    Doc,

This is the most important question. Over 15 years ago the major Jewish organizations began to call anti-Zionism the new anti-Semitism. This is undoubtedly correct. Israel bashing as a new deceptive way to be anti-Semitic is just perfect for the crypto-Marxist mentality of the Obamite gang. Nikki’s speech was perfect in combating exactly this phenomenon. How in the world could the U.N. be devoting such massive resources to minor difficulty of a few new buildings in heavily Jewish areas that have been contested only by extreme claims. Meanwhile, the U.N. ignores genocidal policies in the Middle East and Africa that cause the rash of desperate migration to Europe & North America.

You know a leaf fell in Montana and the grey fox got a head cold so we can’t build the XL pipeline. This is the same kind of argument. An Israeli wants to add an extra bedroom & bathroom on his house so that’s why the U.N. must deny Israel’s legitimacy and accept the tyranny of Iranian aggression that threatens every other Middle Eastern country. Nikki just said “We’re not buying this garbage anymore” in so many words.

    Cool.

    Regards,

    Jim

    I like her!

There are not a lot of sensitive policy questions surrounding our participation in the UN.  Don’t you think it’s possible that she and Trump discussed the major ones and are in agreement?  I do.  The big questions, such as pulling out of the useless organization, and/or kicking them out of NY, would be Trump’s call, anyway.

Well, I think the people he nominated are known for criticizing the boss.  McMaster literally wrote the book on the need to make your voice heard.  I am starting to think Trump only flips out over public criticism as opposed to private discussion.

I suspect Trump only “flips out” when he sees a need and a purpose for it. The fictional character Lord Kalvan/Calvin Morrison did that in H. Beam Piper’s Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen.

Thanks for the update! I also see this as a way for Nikki Haley to add to her resume for future political campaigns. I liked what I heard/read about her time as governor of South Carolina, and this stint as UN ambassador will give her some national and international experience. As UN ambassador, she’s getting a good dose of reality as to how dictatorial, anti-Semitic, bureaucratic, and just plain dangerous much of the rest of the world is, which will serve her well if she ever runs for national office.

I remember hearing Alan Keyes when he was an assistant ambassador to the UN saying he spent 70% of his time defending the U.S. position on Israel. The UN is a cesspool of racist bigots so I doubt anything will change.

Thanks for the answer sir.   I do know that some of the Black radicals our last president was exposed to were also intrinsically anti-Semitic so I’ve always wondered.

Personally, the sooner people give up on the Middle East peace process, the better.  There will not be a solution to the I-P feed without the Palestinians getting completely and undeniably defeated by Israel, and I don’t see that likely to happen.   We gain nothing from helping the Palestinians, so we should do our best to give our allies backing and just ignore them.

Nikki Haley is not there to convince people as much as represent our interests.  Most people there are not going to change their minds, as they have powerful reasons not to do so.

The United States reaffirmed its commitment to its strongest ally, and the only real democracy, in the region. The song should be the same, we support our allies. It is a set position, it need not convince anyone. It just tells the World where the United States stands. Hopefully other allies will see that the United States stands with its friends.

And yeah, until the Palestinians stop bombing children, the Peace Process is likely to have the same outcome. That is not a reason to switch sides or back away from our allies.

No, Trump only flips out over what he considers unfair and unrealistic criticism.  Also a lot that is reported as Trump flipping out is just trash talk / banter.  It does not mean anything it is just what guys do.  Maybe the coast folk and city dwellers can not understand trash talk but fly over understands it quite well.

Trump is a city dweller from the coast, but he’ll never be a silk-purse élite type, no matter how much money he has. He will always be the sow’s ear. There’s nothing wrong with that from our perspective.

It is one of the reasons I have never feared Trump.  My family is out of construction and I know a few guys like him.  About 75% of what they say is utter BS but the 25% is pure gold.  They may fail at 75% of what they start but the 25% they do accomplish more than makes up for it.  I sort of expect this is what we will see with Trump.  A lot of failed initiatives, many in areas that everybody else has failed before, but what he does get right is going to shine and he will be remembered for it.  Provided that the powers that be do not shut him down completely.
