How to Lose a Friend

Today I got a text from a neighbor and friend. His text was in reference to an upcoming Home Owners Association meeting. His first text was innocuous as was my reply. We have not really talked politics but I know he is a Democrat and he knows I am not. He has no idea for whom I voted. He then baited me and I took the bait. The following is the conversation exactly as it appears on my phone.

Friend: Just spoke to Caroline at Sweetgrass. Still — no hour for the meeting on the 28th, but tried to assure me it wasn’t a daytime event.

Cheese: Did you ask for a copy of the new budget?

Friend: She said it will be released along with Trump’s tax returns

Cheese: and Obama’s college records.

Friend: They’re out there.12 yrs teaching at Harvard too.

Cheese: As a foreign student.

Friend: Explain to me someday how the “missing budget” bothers you but 20yrs of hidden tax returns from the Negotiator-in-Chief doesn’t? Spock says — “illogical” Captain.

Cheese: Beam me up Scotty. BTW who said it doesn’t?

Friend: Enlighten me someday soon.

Cheese: Soon as we get all of Hillary’s email.

Friend: Ok Cheese. It always falls back on Hillary. When she is dead, we’ll all live happily ever after. Those who don’t? Will still blame her —  You know, she’s the one who told Michael Flynn to call the Russians.

Cheese: No she is the one who gave the ok to sell 20% of the U 238 to the Russians.

Friend: As a gov’t official and former 1st Lady, she has a record to publicly critique. And though she’s NOT on the political radar, she is still your punching bag — anything/anyone to deflect from real issues.  END of discussion.

Cheese: I lived the Obama nightmare for 8 years. Now it’s your turn, change is hard. Get used to it.

Friend: Ok you win your argument with the past. Are we done, or do you still want to blame HR for something else?

Cheese: The choice was HRC or Trump. He won she didn’t. Sorry.

End of transcript.

Well Ricochet was I too easy or to hard? Will he talk to me again? Should I have just ignored him when he baited me? Is this typical of your liberal friends? How would you have handled it?

    Awesome. Good job.

I’m blessed. I don’t have any liberal friends.

Perhaps but he seems angry. Trump was in town today at Boing and I think he got inspired.

I think you still have a friend and that you both handled the argument well, actually, and with a light touch. He opened the door, and he who opens the door has to expect a little pushback. But that’s just me — I live in a super-extreme liberal town where political arguments end in “racist!”, “xenophobe!” or an expletive.  For that reason, most all the Trump voters I know are quiet about it. Your exchange comes across as gentlemanly in comparison — you both should come to NJ and teach us some manners!

Actually, don’t — you’d get beaten. Jersey justice, only the strong survive.

I have to wonder if our lefty friends ever worry about losing our friendship when they start these things. I have a family member who would start something on Facebook and then when I would (delicately) respond (it’s family), he’d say, “I hate talking politics.” In other words, “you’re winning, so I’m going to end the discussion.”

LOL! My best friends are raging progressives. We have a fun game where my girlfriend and I practice finding the Venn diagram part where we overlap in agreement. The areas are small, but honestly, getting bigger as she sees the terror of the unbridled executive branch in the hands of her enemy. I am a libertarian, so there is some natural overlap, but not a lot. I am probably closer to a conservatarian, but still, fairly large overlap. And living in IL, I did not feel like I needed to vote for Trump. So I voted for Johnson. I’m not sure what would have happened had I voted for Trump. Listening to NTK now, talking about the Trump presser. I do agree with Jay and Mona regarding concerns about his fitness.

Not to  stir the pot but less fit than Hillary?  Chauncey Gardner would be more fit than her.Don’t forget that was the choice. I can’t begin to think of her first month in office.

If Trump turns in the finest performance since Achilles slew Hector (which I stole from RAH), Jay and Mona are going to have concerns about his fitness.

Does anyone else find the leftist embrace of Hillary Clinton really creepy? There should have been a strong Never-Hillary movement on the Left. But she is still somehow good according to them.
