And the First Sanctuary Falls…
Trump hasn’t even been in office a full week, and it seems like he’s gotten more done than Dubya did in eight years:
Fearing a loss of millions of dollars for defying immigration authorities, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez on Thursday ordered county jails to comply with federal immigration detention requests — effectively gutting the county’s position as a “sanctuary” for immigrants in the country illegally. Gimenez cited an executive order signed Wednesday by President Donald Trump that threatened to cut federal grants for any counties or cities that don’t cooperate fully with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Since 2013, Miami-Dade has refused to indefinitely detain inmates who are in the country illegally and wanted by ICE — not based on principle, but because the federal government doesn’t fully reimburse the county for the expense.
More:
Published in Domestic Policy, ImmigrationCounty Commissioner Sally Heyman, a Democrat who sponsored the 2013 measure that stopped Miami-Dade’s compliance with unreimbursed immigration detentions, said she was already working on legislation to undo the county’s position so Miami-Dade wouldn’t be targeted for federal cuts.
“It’s a terrible situation,” she said.
Heyman said she met with the feds in December in Washington, and earlier this month in Miami, to try to clarify Miami-Dade’s stance. Immigration authorities told her they now have enough facilities to house detainees, so they should be able to pick up inmates from local jails within 48 hours — instead of forcing the county to incur the expense for their prolonged detention.
When cops arrest someone wanted by immigration authorities, the feds ask local jails for the courtesy of holding the detainees long enough for them to pick them up — even if that means keeping the detainees behind bars for longer than the period required for the non-immigration crime they were arrested for.
Heyman said Gimenez’s strong-mayor position allows him to direct the corrections department in spite of the commission’s 2013 resolution.
True, but not a very high bar to set.
Winning, so much winning!
Whoa. Trump may be the most consequential president since Reagan. Wow! I wish I had supported him in the primaries.
I am surprised at the winning.
On the negative side, here in Pittsburgh, we aren’t a sanctuary city but our idiot mayor is saying we are and we won’t comply. Seriously? I’ve met the guy. He is honestly one of the most stupid people I’ve ever met. Democrats boggle my mind.
He wants to be deep in the streets with the martyrs.
That’s unfortunate, Pittsburgh is such a great city. I mean, the Caps are much better, but I still like Pittsburgh.
I hope the President realizes that a lot of cities do not have to declare themselves a “sanctuary city” because it is the County that is the Sanctuary. For instance, it isn’t Austin here in Central Texas that is the Sanctuary City, it is Travis County. That’s why it is Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez who our great Governor is fighting with, not the Austin City Council.
I once saw a map that showed Iowa has only one Sanctuary City, but almost the entire state is a Sanctuary because almost every county is a Sanctuary County. So Iowa might be able to escape this, even though they’re worse than California!
Unless, of course, JcTPatriot accidentally Tweets that information to the President.
Good, this is long overdue. I wonder when the first lawsuit will be filed.
Forest Grove, Oregon decided to not be a sanctuary city by one vote. Sole comment was “We need the money”
Many cities do not need to declare sanctuary. See my post a couple slots above yours.
Mayor Peduto is goofy and a bit clueless at times, calls himself Progressive. He advocated Pittsburgh taking in Syrians in mass. He also ranted at police officers who were controlling a protest crowd. Then there was the embarrassment of his hired Police Chief who was photographed with some Black Lives Matters themed sign and disparaged the city police force. Pittsburgh is also under PA Act 47 to manage the city’s finances due to the city falling into financial distress and not being able to manage their budget or even fully account for it. That’s why the state government had to step in to help the city. So he’s not really in a position to put Pittsburgh on the chopping block for potential federal funds while the city is doing infrastructure upgrades and the city requires a financial lifeline.
That’s OK Manny. He still needs your support now. He has plenty of non-support to battle.
It should be noted that there are many very fine folks who are for sanctuary status because they have to be for purely conservative reasons. The Feds must be forced to reimburse locals who incarcerate their illegals and also pay for any other expenses. This is currently not the case. This act alone will likely eliminate every sanctuary city in a red state/county.
Looks like Ricochet has been taken over by Trump people. Can’t we boot some out just to raise the level a bit? (ducking).
Not trying to gainsay this, because I’m sympathetic to Trump’s position on the sanctuary cities question, but it’s worth noting that Carlos Gimenez is one of America’s few Republican big city mayors (there are a few others in Oklahoma City, San Diego, Albuquerque, Jacksonville, etc.). Now, he wasn’t exactly a Trump supporter, but I suspect he’s operating with a set of incentives very different than you’ll see in a lot of other major metros. Don’t expect the likes of Bill de Blasio or Eric Garcetti to come to heel nearly as easily.
TROY’S BACK!
No need to duck, my friend. I’m from Texas and my support was 100% for Ted Cruz, mainly because the amazing Chief Justice William Rehnquist chose him to be his Clerk. That means something to me, and I still hold Senator Cruz to be the most Conservative candidate for President in a long time.
However, our President is Donald John Trump, and I support him 100%, even when I disagree with him <grin>
I think the vast majority of the folks on Ricochet would tell you a similar story, and I hope you get on board soon. My goal is to KEEP our President Conservative, working for the right.
Thanks, Troy for the insight. Carlos was born in Havana prior to Castro taking over, so I think he understands the magic of the USA better than a lot of people who were born here.
I don’t think you’ll find many Ricochet members who are hoping Trump fails no matter how much they might criticize him when they disagree. Trump’s done a lot of good so far and kept his campaign promises. I hope he does the right thing re: the wall and go to congress for the appropriations – process matters when it comes to government.
Sounds like presidential timber.
Grumpy people often have a difficult time being in a group of happy people. Isn’t that right, Marion?
I think this explains it precisely. And I’d like to credit the avid Trump supporters in our community for accepting us Nevers and Lukewarmers on these terms. It wasn’t always clear before the election that it would be civil afterward.
