Ronna Romney McDaniel Is New RNC Leader

Looks like a Romney will be in the mix in Trump’s GOP. The Republican National Committee chose Ronna Romney McDaniel to succeed Reince Priebus, who will serve as the White House Chief of Staff. The details from Fox News:

McDaniel, President-elect Donald Trump’s preferred candidate, previously served as the chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party and played a key role in delivering the state by a thin margin to Trump in the November election.

McDaniel, 43, is the niece of 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney and earned favor with Trump by supporting him despite a feud earlier this year between her uncle and the now-president elect.

“I am a mom from Michigan,” she said. “I am an outsider. And I am going to do everything I can to make sure Donald Trump and Republicans everywhere are successful.”

Yeah, I guess this is what the party is worth now.  They fought like hell to stop Trump, so a nobody who has nothing except nepotism to her credit is now “in charge.”  I suspect she will collect a paycheck as a sop to her uncle and that will be that.

You’re mistaken.  I know Ronna personally, and she’s had to make some tough decisions in Michigan that would have floored lesser people.  She is also someone for whom public service means something other than a paycheck.  Her heart is conservative, and she has struggled to build a movement that incorporates all the elements within the Republican tent.  Please reconsider your assessment and give her a chance.  When Trump won the nomination, the Republicans here in Michigan were able to tip Michigan for the first time in a long time, and a lot of it was due to her leadership.

I will remain skeptical on that point.  Actually, on all those points.

I’m tired of Kennedies, Clintons, Romneys, and Bushes.  A pox on them all.

That was my thought, too.  Mitt Romney came relatively close in Michigan four years ago, but swinging it for Trump was huge (not just in terms of electoral votes, but psychologically as well).

The part that concerns me is this:

Massachusetts GOP chair Kirsten Hughes said McDaniel’s election is part of “an honest effort” to improve the party’s standing with women. After the 2012 presidential election defeat, the RNC’s now famous “autopsy” encouraged the party to “grow the ranks of influential female voices in the Republican Party.”

I’ve met Kirsten and think she is a lovely person, but she is the head of a very fractured GOP in Massachusetts and seems unable to stop taking shots at conservatives for long enough to focus on building the party.  It also implies that Ronna McDaniel is more of a token than a brilliant strategist who has built a vibrant party that helped turn Michigan red (from the governor’s office to Trump’s win).

In fact, how can we accept that she was a leader that delivered Michigan for Trump when no one even believed he would win it?  The whole Trump victory seemed to be despite her and the establishment.

We’ll see. The Archdruid has an interesting take:

…the core concept of the identity politics currently central to the American left [is]: the conviction that the only divisions in American society that matter are those that have some basis in biology.

Skin color, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability—these are the divisions that the American left likes to talk about these days, to the exclusion of all other social divisions, and especially to the exclusion of social class.  Since the left has dominated public discourse in the United States for many decades now, those have become the divisions that the American right talks about, too. [Emphases added.] (Please note, by the way, the last four words in the paragraph above: “some basis in biology.” I’m not saying that these categories are purely biological in nature; every one of them is defined in practice by a galaxy of cultural constructs and presuppositions, and the link to biology is an ostensive category marker rather than a definition. I insert this caveat because I’ve noticed that a great many people go out of their way to misunderstand the point I’m trying to make here.)

He makes a lot of sense; also the point that Trump’s signature gimme hat was a deliberate appeal to working class voters as a social class. McDaniel needs to get that – and the problem with accepting the Left’s biological and pseudobiological identity politics. I hope she can help the party reframe its thinking.

I’m still convinced that every state he carried (Texas included) is mostly because of how much Clinton sucked.

It’s a President’s prerogative. Here in Ohio Trump engineered the downfall of Kasich’s state chairman.

Yes, I will be pleased if he follows through on his current course of action, but I was willing to accept nearly anything to avoid Clinton having power.

Right, because people came out by the tens of thousands just to hear him speak at rallies because “Clinton sucked”. Hmm, not sure I agree with you on that one. I for one, don’t know which Republican I would have preferred to Trump if there even was one. I have hope that Trump will reform the party into one that cares about what people care about and not just “conservative ideals”.

I liked Romney a lot – he was Governor when I lived in MA and did a good job for being a liberal state, and voted for him for President. He’s very smart and commands respect.  If his daughter is anything like him, she will do well.  This is in keeping with the way Trump thinks – a working class mom – why not? Look at the disasters that the Democrats appointed.

They have boots on the ground in DC and broadcasted to talk radio today – thousands are showing up like Latinos for Trump – they let him speak – he said when he heard Bernie Sanders, he became a Trump supporter because socialism ruined his country of Venezuela. He said he supports the wall, and said the drug cartels are paying Mexicans $5K each to get drugs and networks into our country. Will be interesting to see how this is covered  – seems alternative media will have these stories and MSM will focus on the paid protesters being bussed in.

In retrospect, it seems obvious that Clinton couldn’t win, but Cruz came in second place in MI, and there was a LOT of bad blood at the state convention between Cruz delegates and the Trump opposition.  We thought we would lose Mi to Clinton because of the stay-at-homers.  Ronna worked hard behind the scenes and took a few metaphorical bullets in the process.

That’s  a very easy claim to make, difficult to prove.  I’m sure that’s just what uncle Romney wants everyone to believe.  “Yes, I am the medicine man.  I did a magic dance and that’s why it rained.”
