Contributor Post Created with Sketch. House GOP Moves to End Federal Funding of Planned Parenthood

We’re used to the GOP Congress making headlines for breaking promises to their voters or letting Democrats pick their pockets. So it’s especially satisfying to hear Paul Ryan’s latest detail on the House Republicans’ Obamacare strategy: no more funds for Planned Parenthood.

Republicans plan to strip Planned Parenthood of hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding as part of their rapid push to repeal President Obama’s health-care overhaul, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan said Thursday.

Ryan said a defunding measure would appear in a special fast-track bill that is expected to pass Congress as soon as next month. “Planned Parenthood legislation would be in our reconciliation bill,” he said at a news conference in response to a question about plans to defund the organization.

Reconciliation is a special congressional procedure allowing legislation to bypass a Senate filibuster, meaning it would need only a simple majority of senators to pass rather than a 60-vote supermajority.

Ryan made his comments two days after a special investigative panel formed by Republicans issued a report recommending that Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, lose its access to Medicaid reimbursements and federal family-planning funds. The GOP report also recommended that Congress allow states to exclude abortion providers from their Medicaid programs.

The federal government gave Planned Parenthood $553 million in 2014, about half of its total funding. Technically, they’re not supposed to use that money for abortions, but that “service” is central to their mission.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi blasted the move. “I just would like to speak individually to women across America,” she said. “This is about respect for you, for your judgment about your personal decisions in terms of your reproductive needs, the size and timing of your family or the rest, not to be determined by the insurance company or by the Republican ideological right-wing caucus in the House of Representatives.”

News for Pelosi: According to a recent Marist poll, 69 percent of women oppose taxpayer funding of abortion.

Yes, yes, yes! Pro-life is my number one issue. Federal funding of the slaughter of children needs to stop.

Live by reconciliation, die by reconciliation. Live by breaking the filibuster, die by a broken filibuster.

The Democrats behaved as if they would never end up out of power. Now they reap the tares they have sown.

I wish our politicians would call it “stopping government subsidies of Planned Parenthood?” “Defunding” or “stopping funding” makes it sound like PP won’t be able to function without taxpayer money.

@exjon When Nancy Pelosi thinks that her voice resonates with me, I am reminded of how Hillary lost. “I just would like to speak individually to women across America” Her own voice is heard across the world because her mother did not abort her.

Does anyone here know the likelihood of it passing the Senate? I’m thinking of the usual RINOs, like Susan Collins and a few others. I presume that she will be lobbied hard by the pro-borts.

In the summer of 2015 (?) when they tried to end the government subsidies of planned parenthood, the only GOP senator to vote against the defunding was Mark Kirk and he’s gone now. McConnell will be able to keep the caucus in line for this vote.

    Worth bringing this back up.

That’s right, PP doesn’t perform mammograms. They are a baby-killing mill and nothing else.

There is still a lot of Americans with no health insurance. Woman without can get an exam at PP, and if the MD thinks she needs a mammogram they can write a scrip for it. You can just walk in off the street and get a mammogram, must have a MD prescription.

The only breast cancer “screening” that pp offers is the same as a self exam that women should know how to do. They DO NOT DO mammograms!!

If women want to have actual health care (ie. not murder their unborn baby) then they can go to an urgent care/prompt care/ walk-in clinic facilities. Those are all cheaper than an emergency room. They will take people without health insurance. They will offer complete health-services.

There’s a silver lining for those Americans of liberal bent who want to support Planned Parenthood for all the ‘good’ work that they do in the aftermath of having their taxpayer funding yanked by the proposed defunding measure. Planned Parenthood is recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation by the Internal Revenue Service, so all charitable donations are fully tax deductible.

Since 1976, it has been illegal for federal funds to be used for abortions, so the only services being affected by the defunding measure are technically the non-abortion services, which as you correctly point out women can obtain elsewhere. What is not mentioned is the impetus that raised the opposition to all funding — the selling of baby parts scandal. I think it was to be expected that a corporation as ideologically driven as PP would attempt to bend the rules in the name of keeping themselves in business. I think the appropriate thing to happen with this corporations is to take them off public funding and force them to rely on charitable contributions. This will make them clean up their act.

Why even repeat the fiction that Federal support didn’t fund abortion. They were created to perform abortions on brown people and other minorities as part of the progressives’s eugenics priority. It remains the reason for their existence. The other services are loss leaders, to bring in customer and help establish them in minority neighborhoods. Selling baby parts grabbed peoples attention and demonstrated again to some folks who didn’t know any better, that the place is corrupt corrupting and dedicated to abortion but it thrives only because of progressive slavish dedication to racism and abortion.

Here’s a typical conversation I have in the ER with women every day.

Me :”When was your last period?”

M “Are you using any form of birth control, anything to prevent pregnancy?”

    W : “No”

M ” You aren’t using anything? Is there a chance you could be pregnant?”

    W: “No”

M ” Are you having sex, I mean intercourse with a man?”

    W “Yes”

M ” Let me get this straight, you aren’t using anything to avoid getting pregnant, and you are having sex, but you can’t be pregnant?”

    Pregnancy test follows.

Occasionally I return with the positive result to tears.

These are some of the women who end up customers at PP.
