McCain press releases are deemed worthy of their own ricochet main feed post?
Well I guess the silver lining in the Trump cloud is the increased likelihood that McCain will either be taken out in the primary or the general.
Glad he was able to stop before running over the camera men to sanctimoniously mug for the cameras. If only he was able to restrict free speech and invade a country, it could have been a hat trick.
As much as I dislike McCain, even a broken clock is right twice a day. Trump stepped in it with both feet, and true to his nature he not only hasn’t attempted to clean his shoes, he is praising the aroma and feel of the lawn fudge which surrounds him now. I have said in the past that Trump supporters feel the need to justify everything he says, no matter how bad it might be. He drags otherwise intelligent people into the worst forms of demagoguery. This is just one more example. This man proves his unworthiness almost on a daily basis. I can’t believe that anyone who has lived through nearly 8 years of Obama wants to replace him with someone at least as bad.
Eugene: If they don’t justify everything Trump says that means they are for Clinton? Are you saying they should be for Clinton? What about the Supreme Court?
Ah, John McCain. Sanctimonious, sentimental, and frequently underinformed and with poor judgement. Again here?
Valiuth, if I didn’t know that you and I are on the same side, I would have missed your sarcasm.
The manner in which Trump turns his followers into pigs is reminiscent of Circe. I have no problem with those who make the choice to vote for Trump based on those two factors. What disgusts me is their willingness to give up every drop of integrity they have to find justifications for his outrageous behavior.[Editors’ Note: @eugenekriegsmann, as should go without saying, calling fellow members pigs — classical allusion or no — is not within the CoC. Neither, we should add is attacking the integrity of all Trump supporters.]
Google Terry McAuliffe and Hillary’s brother Anthony Rodham and the EB-5 corruption scandal.
Or, better yet: here!
McCain is a descent man and at one point showed extraordinary grit and courage. He’s not very bright, is from a different period of our history and it’s time for him to retire.
I caught the Hillary interview on Fox News Sunday.
But just when she made me so angry that I became willing to consider Trump …
One needn’t claim moral superiority to call out acts of extreme stupidity and even moral offense, which Donald Trump seems willing to supply without limit. The moment he became the nominee, the Republican Party was greatly diminished and set on a potentially devastating course. The dissonance we have already seen – where leading party figures like Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell and John McCain have endorsed Trump but then must repeatedly acknowledge continuing instances of behavior they themselves deem racist, wrong, or otherwise inappropriate – is likely to end badly for all involved. And if the recent past is any guide, it’s only going to get worse.
As someone who won’t support either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump, I hope Gary Johnson and William Weld run a particularly good campaign and qualify to participate in the debates. Although I seriously disagree with them on some issues, particularly national defense/foreign policy, they are far superior choices to Clinton or Trump. Their successful records as Republican governors of Democratic states bodes well for their ability bring people together, which this country badly needs. And they both appear to meet a basic character test for holding the most powerful office in the world, a test which Clinton and Trump both fail abysmally.
Ok, I am on the record that I will be voting for Trump. That said this is incredibly stupid. There is no reason to engage the parents of a fallen soldier.
Looking at this strictly as a campaign issue, there was never going to be any upside for Trump in this it was all downside. If asked about the Khan family speech the only answer he needed to give is “I’d like to thank them for their family’s service to the country”
But that would have been the mature, dignified, appropriate response. Those are never Trump’s choices.
Yes.
Also, McCain’s statement is pitch perfect to my ear. Starts by saying he doesn’t see himself as better than Trump morally, moves onto his opinion (which he gives without personally insulting Trump), and then gives appropriate recognition to the family. How is this wrong? Does everything have to be filtered through the lens of politics and policy?
Editor’s Desk: Thanks for posting, I likely would not have seen it any other way.
I prefer the ones who are not so humble.
When a Republican Senator and unsuccessful presidential candidate who is, for our sins, a senior figure of his party speaks to rebuke the current presidential candidate, pretty much yes. McCain knows that.
As a pilot, McCain was courageous, reckless and foolish – and probably escaped the consequences due to who his father and grandfather were.
As a prisoner, McCain conducted himself bravely and very honorably.
As a politician, he has again been foolish many times.
Consider: His service injuries left McCain with real physical limitations. Look at videos of him from 2008. Turn the sound off. Remember that Democrats back then were raising questions about his mental status.
What sort of VP choice would
A healthy, attractive, younger woman.
The list of Republican women with real executive experience was very short. Whatever you think of Palin, McCain picked her, then wouldn’t back her in the crunch. McCain’s behavior was dishonorable. Maybe the Senate was bad for his character.
Yep, no question John McCain is the guy I’d go to for advice on how to run for president.
Problem with Trump is he tries to do his own heavy lifting instead of doing like Clinton by getting the word out to his buddies in the media to do it for him, or siccing his paid attack dogs on whoever he wants to discredit.
What do you suppose is the likelihood that nice things will happen to the Khan family (govt contracts, sweetheart business referrals, seats on non-profit liberal foundation boards) over the next 5-10 years, and not-so-nice things are going to happen to Pat Smith & her family (TCMP audits, that kind of thing).
Is there a McCain statement in support of Patricia Smith, challenging the Democrats to set the example for what our country can and should represent, demanding that they set the example for our country, telling them that Arizona is watching? Does it tell Ms. Smith, “Your son was the best of America, and the memory of his sacrifice will make us a better nation — and he will never be forgotten.”
Was it posted here by Ricochet’s editors?
I’ve never forgotten that in 2000 McCain was sending direct mail to Democrats I knew but not Republicans- or that over the years there have been not one but two credible stories that he was going to switch parties.
I expect that should he lose his primary he will immediately switch, and begin shrieking about how loathsome those vile Republicans are, since they will have given him the boot.
And, of course, immediately endorse Hillary Satan.
The usual suspects of the gop will blame Trump, because he said mean things about McCain some time ago.
McCain. My opinion is not high.
As soon as I saw McCain said something my first thought was him, Graham and the Muslim Brotherhood.
Bueller?
Still waiting to hear about McCain’s “pitch perfect” “call out [of] acts of extreme stupidity and even moral offense” committed by Hillary Clinton and the Democrats in lying to and attacking Patricia Smith.
