DNC Day One Wrap Up

Monday was the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. Not unlike the Republican convention, which had a theme each night, the Democrats had a theme too. As near as we can figure, last night’s theme was “Angry Yelling.”
There were several familiar Democratic tropes at work. Al Franken showed up to throw some red meat into the crowd and try to be funny. (But he’s out of practice, his timing was a mess, his material was dusty, and his jokes didn’t quite land.) At one point Franken was out there with comedian and Bernie Sanders supporter Sarah Silverman, who caused a stir when she said “To the ‘Bernie or Bust’ people, you’re being ridiculous.” They awkwardly tried to kill time while they were waiting for Paul Simon to come out and perform. (He looks like death now, by the way … so he kinda fits in among the Democrats.) And just to prove that Democratic convention clichés never die, Simon was followed by a video of Mario Cuomo.
Last night featured several high profile Democrats, including Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren (who was introduced by the obligatory random Kennedy), but the real stars were Michelle Obama and Bernie Sanders.
Just so everybody got the message, the First Lady was given the prime 10 pm speaking slot. (We’re not really sure what she said, but if you wait a few years, Melania Trump will let us know.)
Sanders didn’t saunter out until 10:50, but when he did, the cheering went on for several minutes. It sounded like he got the biggest cheers of the night. What did he say? Pretty much the same crap he said all through the primary, except he now promised that Hillary Clinton will do all these things he promised to do and solve all the problems that he promised to solve. He also talked about how the Democratic platform now reflects the issues he stood for.
But there was no note of defiance, there was no rebellion, no calls to vote one’s conscience. Bernie fell in line just like he was supposed to and shilled for Clinton. It remains to be seen if his supporters inside and outside the hall will heed his call.

There never are calls to “vote one’s conscience” amoung leftists. One cannot vote what one does not have. They are power mad and authoritarian and they *always* fall into line.
The satisfaction across Bills face upon Bernies concluding remarks means Bernie did what he was told to do. He will not meet an untimely, mysterious demise.
I’m afraid I think the polar opposite. All the Dems have these days is an ideology. They call it conscience just as readily as conservatives. The fact that it is vapid, ephemeral, and quite possibly nonexistent has never stopped them from invoking it before.
Some thoughts:
You know, ya gotta at least respect, on some level, the leftist, statist, umm, er, Democrats for their lockstep obedience to sheer power
You have to kind of grudgingly respect their sheer Stalinist ability to maintain order, discipline, obedience throughout the ranks…
Yo gotta grant that when Bernie stopped being an Independent and joined the Democrats, he certainly meant it, literally…
Michelle Obama can give a speech…
Al Franken is one of those people that are hard to not, ya know, just friggin’ hate…and “hate” in that way that you “hate” that pretentious movie star trying to talk deep about the corruption of BIG lettuce…
Warren evidently learned a lot about sarcasm, irony, economics, and surprisingly, yelling from her grandmother and her Native American lore…
Booker did a simply great “death of irony” skit. Talking good (smurk) about the founders and their document, right before getting ready to return to the senate to shred them. Well done.
Hillary Rodham Clinton could actually be President…sigh
Wrap up of Dems first night , still cannot resist dig at Trump.
I wanted to watch it, felt I should and started several times to watch it, but I cant stand to listen to any of them.
You’re not missing anything. There’ll be a TDS wrap up each day. And if anyone says anything worth seeing, there will be clips on YouTube.
Shot,
It occurred to me that Franken and Silverman might go out on a date. I’d be very interested to find out which one came back alive.

Jim
I watched some of the speeches for a while. Lots of nonsense there. I think my favorite line was when one of the speakers talked about the horror that is the absence of forced paid family leave and said our labor laws are still in the dark ages. Right. The United States hasn’t updated it’s labor laws in well over 700 years.
There were a lot of hits on Trump. Since he reflexively (one might say “compulsively”) hits back, it will be interesting to see if the Dems’ first night is enough to focus his mind and get him off his Cruz/JFK conspiracy track.

It’s funny. Cruz refuses to support Trump and Trump’s supporters boo. Bernie endorses Hillary and his supporters boo. Sometimes you can’t spackle over the cracks.
