Now That’s Real Progress: Conservatives Win in AZ
My adopted state (one can never be a true Arizonan unless native born) has gone and done it again. This time it’s not about concealed carry — No permit? No problem! — immigration (we E-Verify everyone), tent jails and bologna sandwiches (were you expecting the Ritz and caviar?), guns set loose by the Feds so the Mexican Cartels can be properly armed (every proper drug lord should have a genuine, made in USA, semi-automatic rifle!), or our tendency to be a little hard headed. This time it’s about reeling in the academy’s political correctness coercion coalition.
It is now illegal in Arizona to restrict free speech in any way on our college campuses. Anyone can say anything, anywhere, anytime, even if someone’s precious PC ears find it distressing. This is all within reason, of course, holding to the “fire” exclamation and threats exceptions. We also made it illegal to attempt to obstruct the rights of others to speak or to listen to political speech anywhere, anytime. It will be interesting to see how that particular law will be enforced.
There’s been little reaction to this from the Left thus far, other than to say that both these new laws were totally unnecessary (that goes without saying). I can, however, tell you this: When my youngest returned from Northern Arizona University last weekend, despite my years of dogged conservative tutelage, she was quick to introject political correctness into our household conversations. For example, did you know that it is impolite to point out that heterosexual boys must overcome a “gay” bias when considering joining a high school chorus? (Me: Facts can’t be impolite), or that eating meat with every meal is boorish (Me: So what?). We’ve now ignored her for a week and she’s re-acclimated. Thank goodness.
As an aside, our beloved ASU has accepted a Koch Foundation grant a few years ago to set up the ASU Center for the Study of Economic Liberty, an on-campus office charged with promoting free market ideas and liberty. It specifically received $5 million in the state budget just signed into law. The typical local liberal establishment folks are treating this like the Satanists have decided to develop a worship center at ASU.
So, to all the Ricochetti who may think that conservatives never win, we’ve proven that wrong here in the Grand Canyon State.
I shouldn’t feel so gleeful about all this, but I do.

Your family eats non-meat?
I think I’ve heard of that culinary practice…vegatism right?
I’ve actually never heard that one before. Most people who object to meat seem to object to all of it. What’s her reasoning here?
I think they would be more likely to embrace the Satanists.
I’ve been known to enjoy Hot and Sour soup, which I believe has tofu in it. And I love a good eggplant parm. But generally speaking, there is some form animal protein provided with every meal I eat. At breakfast, and with pizza, there are often multiple forms (to make up for cereal mornings.) And as for your inferred question, there is no such thing as a meat substitute. There is meat and there is not. Neither can stand in for the other.
A thousand likes for this alone.
We should all be moving toward veganism. It starts with limiting meat, then eliminating meat, but not fish, then to just eggs and cheese with veggies, then only veggies, then only fruit and finally, to tree bark (read: North Korea.) Meat, by the way, is elitist, ignoring the valuable life of cows, pigs and chickens, and a show of financial chauvinism. It is the digestive form of colonialism, of animal subjugation; I claim you. I own you. I eat you.
I think you’re right.
Wait, this isn’t actually the explanation is it?
I figured it had something to do with solidarity with the world’s poor.
It’s that too of course, that’s the financial chauvinism part, but it’s more about the sufferings of Gaia’s little creatures. Wait until they figure out that plants have feelings too. You’ve seen Wizard of Oz right? The apple trees? Duh.
Just when I think I’ve heard the stupidest thing ever someone else tells me what’s being said on a college campus.
You’ve convinced me. We are definitely moving there!
There is meat and there is Bacon, Prime NY Strips, Iowa Pork Chops, Texas, St Louis and N. Carolina BBQ and Ribs, Southern Fried Chicken and breakfast cooked in leaf lard. (Add as you like)
There is meat and there is food of the Gods.
And then there is seafood…
Hahahahahahaha.
Umbra beat me to it on this one.
I was always partial to the Porterhouse steaks you can find in Texas. Apparently, they keep the good stuff for themselves.
WHO! TOLD! YOU?!
I have had NY Strips in probably 40 of the 50 states. Named so on the menu. Including Texas. (I assume Houston still is part of Texas) If I had to pick a state, the best ones I have had were in Jackson Hole, Chicago , Dallas and Manhattan. Calgary does not count, yet.
Porterhouse is also fine, if you are running low on protein.
I like a good Bottom Round roast, medium rare. I find that prime rib is a bit too oily, but a rib eye steak, burned on the outside and cherry red on the inside – yum! Costco carries a flap steak that makes burritos taste like heaven. It used to be relatively cheap, but now, like a good hearty Zinfindel, it’s been discovered. There is nothing better than a brisket slowly roasted over an open flame in the Texas style. A bone in pork rib roast is tough to beat. For a big crowd, there’s nothing like a full pork butt cooked low and slow and pulled.
In fact, I’ll eat just about anything warm blooded on four legs with the exception of rodents and cats.
You were saying. . .
Yes, there are those who believe that the Satanists already have a run on the place. But they don’t know Sparky. Other than an unfortunate accident last year when he bear hugged a politician who was recovering from back surgery (resulting in a large settlement) Sparky has been a model citizen, an angel even.
I’ll have to nose around and see if Prescott College students care.
Terrific! Do you have any quotes from the local liberals? I’d love to see the news-n-comment on this?
So I have a long mocking thing on the brothers Charles & David Koch’s political ambitions & failures. This sort of thing, though, about education in economics, I wish them good luck. It’s the sort of thing where putting one’s money where one’s mouth is–is actually a reasonable thing to do.
If you can say more about how these changes happened–now that you’ve properly been congratulated & before the steak pictures come out–I’d be grateful. It’s good to hear anyone is trying to defend free speech & I hope these hopes inspire others to do likewise! A friendly rivalry among Southern states might be a place to start…
This is great news, Doug! Good for Arizona! May others follow their lead!
I hope this is the beginning of a wave sweeping over the land. Thanks for reporting. I too would like to hear the particulars.

Some Obama-appointed Federal judge will strike it down as having a “disparate impact” or something like that.
I wish Justice Scalia had lived to hear a case involving “microaggressions”.
Why?
Live a little. Go ahead and feel the glee. In fact, gloat!
I guess this would be a bad time to say that I prefer dark meat?
The double entendre is très amusant.
