Join Ricochet; Get in the New York Post

“Okay,” you may have said. “So there was that one Ricochet member who was on Fox News last week to talk about a post he’d written for the site. Stuff happens. Big deal.”

Well, stuff happens a lot around here. On Thursday, member John Kluge wrote a piece explaining how he — a life-long conservative — has come to support Donald Trump. It caught our editorial staff’s eyes and was promptly promoted to the Main Feed, where it quickly garnered over 300 comments and a lot of great conversation. But that wasn’t the end of the story. Two days and a few emails later, this happened:Screen Shot 2016-03-05 at 9.01.08 PM

And if you’re wondering:

Would you like to appear on Fox News or have your work re-printed in the New York Post? Well, you have to become a member of Ricochet first. (And, yes, we’ve got plenty of room for folks who don’t care about such things, too.)

Get some skin in the game. Join the conversation.

Big deal. Back in ’99 I wrote a letter to the editor of My Family’s annual Christmas newsletter and made front page! [below the fold]

I congratulated  John on his post and recent entry on Ricochet, but felt,  in an extended post, that it was not without inaccuracies and questionable judgments.  Once again, I congratulate him on ascendancy to highly-read print media, and once again suggest that his viewpoint on these issues is not without some notable flaws.

I am happy for the author that his work was published, but I am sad that he doesn’t care that Donald Trump is in favor of big government. If conservatives feel like that, it means that the era of Reagan is truly over, and the age of Obama is here to stay.

The fact that people who self identify as conservatives don’t care about the size of the federal government shows you just how much damage Obama has done to our country.  We now care more about what government can win and do for us rather than whether the federal government is operating within the legal perameters set out by We the People in the U.S. Constitution.  That is a sad, but as the elections are telling us, a very true reality.

I am also not sure why conservative media is pushing out narratives like this in support of the only presidential candidate in the race that sympathized with the Tiannemen Square Massacre and opposes the freedom of speech, press, religion, and private property simultaneously.  I guess, contrary to Hannity’s bumper, freedom is now going out of style.  I guess that makes me a schizophrenic libertarian to care about the bill of rights.  Oh well.

It sounds like the author of the post should take a long look at Ted Cruz, as most of what the author is saying is aligned with Mr. Cruz’s thinking.  I am a volunteer for Mr. Cruz.

I blame Tom Meyer, Frank Soto, and James of England for their cunning placement of the Ricochet logo on TV and at CPAC. So much for the secret handshake! I caught the mailman leaving a Ricochet mug at a dead drop. I’m quite sure a squirrel winked at me knowingly. The word is out.

    Congratulations!

Which is unusual because we usually hire the squirrels to deliver the mugs. After all their offspring don’t run for president.

And because we move so many mugs we have to use yuuuuge squirrels. Winning squirrels. The best, classiest squirrels we can find.

Some websites use badgers. We don’t use badgers. They’re sad animals. Losers, really. I saw a CNN poll the other day saying that badgers finish fourth and fifth in delivering stuff. Bernie Sanders delivers better than badgers. And you don’t want Bernie or Hillary delivering your Supreme Court nominees and you don’t want them delivering your mugs.

Which reminds me… Did John Kluge get a mug? Did Majestyk get a mug? Do I have to wake up my squirrels now? At this time of the night?

I too wish he had agreed with us, but I’m absolutely tickled that another Ricochet member’s views made the national news. We seem to be the opinion-piece equivalent of the ice cream parlor where future movie stars sip their sodas and wait to be discovered.

I do love the genuinely democratic aspect of this: You don’t need to know the right people, go to the right schools, have the right connections, or even have the right views: All you need is your own voice, your own experience, and your willingness to share it. Things like this make me proud of what we’ve accomplished here — even if conservatism itself has seen better days.

So come on everyone: Let’s take advantage of the First Amendment before the next president guts it. You never know whose eye you might catch and whose mind might be changed.

Yeah, I was wondering about that.  As of now, John’s thoughts are under the “News” section of the  NYP online, not the “Opinion” section.  I like rooting for the home team as much as anyone, but I can’t help being interested in why that’s the case since the Ricochet post is patently opinion.  I’m also rather interested in the procedure whereby the post moved from Ricochet to the Post (with Ricochet credit) since, AFAIK, this is unprecedented.  Was Ricochet or John contacted?  Did someone at the NYP simply “repurpose” the material?

That I don’t know — I don’t work for the Post. Seems like it should be in the “opinion” section to me, too, but maybe it’s news when someone makes a case for Trump that’s thoughtful and well-written?

I appreciate the answer since, obviously, no one at Ricochet is under any obligation to provide it.  I feel, however, that a piece is missing here given the extraordinary number of well-written posts that I’ve read and the silence with which they’ve been greeted in printed media.  But that’s very possibly unwarranted and a product of my nature.

Nope, nothing missing. I’m guessing that post caught their eye for the same reason we promoted it: It was well-written, it gave us some insight into what Trump voters might be thinking (which is something many of us just don’t get and want to understand), and it made the case for Trump as well as it can be made.

The missing piece is the pet rock factor. Ricochet gained some critical “last straw” of cachet somewhere and is now trending, as they say.

Congratulations J K, but I’m not ready to join you. I’m still hoping for a cuban ticket agreement to solve this issue. But I’ll read what you offer and hope to see you at at Meet Up or please join us on a AMU of your choosing

As for the following I will consider your request as a valid offer, but Trump is the one that needs to stop acting like a nihnilit or a hillbilly with money first.

I don’t expect you to agree with me or start backing Trump. I would, however, encourage you to at least think about what I and others have said and to understand that the people backing Trump are not nihilists or uneducated hillbillies looking for a job. Some of us are pretty serious people and once considered ourselves conservatives. Even if you still hate Trump, you owe it to conservatism to ask yourself how exactly conservatism managed to alienate so many of its supporters such that they are now willing to vote for someone you loath as much as Trump.

Fascinating to see Ricochet becoming a source for other Murdoch properties. WSJ is next up, I assume. Then the real Times (of London), whose coverage of America could hardly be worse.

I pity those poor fools who wasted their time at journalism school. A return to real reporting from real reporters is imminent…

In the beginning, I wrote some posts with a hope to be mentioned as the Member Post of the Week in the flagship podcast and pick up an official coffee mug (and my gravitational wave post did get discussed on the podcast). Now I’m writing posts with the hope of attracting national media attention. The thing is, it’s not a crazy aspiration — Ricochet actually makes this possible.

As a long time Republican supporter and reliable voter I have felt at times I should change my voter registration to Republican from unaffiliated. With the level of support Trump is receiving from the party in general I am happy I never got around to it.
