Hoyacon: There is certainly something to be said for the fact that Romneycare prevented Romney from going full bore after Obamacare, but a measure of that truth doesn’t excuse an over-the-top characterization of Romney’s entire campaign.

Romney didn’t want to attack Obama, not just on Obamacare, but in general.  Because he didn’t want to be tarred as racist.  He was going to win by being nice.

Do you remember it differently?  Do you remember any examples of Romney going after Obama on anything of substance?

John Kluge: When Romney had a chance to go after Obama when it mattered, he stood there with his teeth in his mouth and did nothing.

Where does this myth come from? I’ve been hearing it for four years and it’s based on nothing at all. Romney went after Obama hard. What else was he supposed to do, call Obama names like a third-grader? Make fun of Obama for some physical defect?

John Kluge: Whatever you think of Trump, there is no denying that these people are losers and utterly incompetent.

Mitt’s won several more elections than Trump, who has never one won in his life. Trump has been a business disaster who has barely been able to hold onto his Daddy’s money–let alone invest it wisely–and has been reduced to third-rate scams and putting his name on every mediocre product imaginable to try to make a little money.

Again, I have my differences with Romney on issues of policy, but if he’s a loser then Donald Trump is a flaming garbage dump. Trump is clearly lying about how much he is worth–even with Daddy’s millions his businesses have been failures and people who have actually looked at his financial records say he’s grossly overvaluing everything he owns.

“Willard Mitt Romney. Scared of Jeb!. Serial presidential candidate. Bitter loser. History’s speed bump.”

I can’t believe I used to respect that woman.

I thank God I never liked or respected Coulter or Hannity. They always seemed like such nasty, slimy people who would tell any lie or abandon any principle if it gave them the opportunity to insult someone they didn’t like.

EThompson: On a more national level, we have a $20 trillion dollar debt and highly negative trade deficits; frankly, I like Donald’s experience with and understanding of these issues.

Yep, Trump has declared bankruptcy 4 times due to his chronic inability to handle debt so clearly he is the man to lead us in this time of massive debt.

Well, his dad is remembered for claiming he was ‘brainwashed’ on Vietnam.

As much as I appreciate you returning after your earlier post, this is, quite frankly, a gross distortion. There is certainly something to be said for the fact that Romneycare prevented Romney from going full bore after Obamacare, but a measure of that truth doesn’t excuse an over-the-top characterization of Romney’s entire campaign.

I don’t see how it doesn’t. He had one good debate and then never again talked about much of anything negative about Obama or any of his scandals.

Trump is right in my opinion…depending on what he meant by it… that the US should adopt a policy that families of terrorists die in retribution for mass casualty attacks.

I would hope no one in our armed forces would obey such an order. I would like to think I would not have.

PHenry: Next time the party tells me I have to hold my nose and vote for their moderate candidate (IE Romney) or it will elect a democrat and move us closer to destruction, I will laugh in their faces. The first time the primary didn’t go their way, THEY abandoned the party.

Nobody ever told you that you had to vote for anyone.  Yeah, the GOP wants your vote.  So do the Democrats want your vote.  And if you haven’t liked that choice in past elections – well, too bad because that was the choice.  But if you wanted to stay home, you were free to do so.

But this time, electing a Democrat isn’t the thing that will do the most to move us closer to destruction.  This time, it’s electing the fascist that will do the most to move us closer to destruction.  And if you take delight in how that will show “them” (whoever the hell “they” are), that’s also your choice.  At least you won’t be getting a “moderate” candidate.

MarciN:Knowing Romney, I think the tipping point with Donald Trump probably came when Trump suggested letting ISIS defeat Assad, thereby effectively turning over Syria to ISIS.

Trump actually suggested Putin put his money where his mouth is and send Russians over to Syria to stop ISIS. This idea appealed to me because we all know Russia doesn’t have the long term financials to finish this off but let’s allow themselves to bankrupt their country while doing so. Reaganesque strategy!

For this evening’s debate, I can imagine a series of clips from Romney’s speech being replayed and then the moderator calls on Trump to respond. Other candidates then get to pile on. Ugh.

One can hear the chortling over at the DNC.

Except for the $100 billion we just gave to Iran, which they can use to help bail out their Syrian proxy. And this isn’t a war being fought by our own bloated Pentagon. The Russians are actually doing this thing on the dirt-cheap.

Well, overall the situation is kind of funny, if you can take a step back from it. However, I think the DNC would much prefer to have Trump as the nominee than to see him taken out of the race.

PHenry: Good lord, I don’t want Trump, but this won’t stop him from winning the primary, it will just polarize his supporters and give ammunition to the Democrats.

Sorry, this is like saying Guantanamo causes terrorism. Trump supporters are long past reasoning with, it seems. Romney is not going to polarize them further.  And whom will the Democrats use this ammo on? Is anyone at this point still in doubt about Trump’s moral fiber? Romney is indeed preaching to the choir. But it is not Romney who is tearing the party apart.

Manny: That was excellent. That was needed. That was a Marcus Tullius Cicero moment.

It was an effective speech and delivered very well.

One irony, though, is that Trump uses invective and Cicero was a master of invective, too. “We know of the boys you have corrupted, we know…”

It seems to me that one of the main reasons Russia is in Syria is as quid-pro-quo for the multi-billion dollar arms sales they’re inking with Iran. Whatever else you could say about Putin’s Russia, it’s not the Soviet Union. I don’t think they would invade a country like Syria unless it made sound financial sense.

    Douglas:

Richard Fulmer:Again, none of Trump’s supporters are even attempting to refute Romney’s arguments.

I essentially argued that Romney is at least as two-faced as Trump is supposed to be, posting footage of Romney praising Trump to the heavens for his business acumen and stating that Trump knew what it took to get the economy going. I didn’t include my own arguments, because frankly, I think Romney’s own words are damning enough.

This is conflating two quite different phenomena.

The Romney who happily received Trump’s endorsement said nice things when receiving the endorsement because — note to Trump — that’s what you do when a prominent public figure endorses you. You don’t say “I’m dismayed to receive the endorsement of this narcissistic serial adulterer who has a habit of bankrupting himself and bilking his creditors.” You don’t even say “Now go, get on the plane.”

That’s the difference between leadership and “get your shine-box” style one-upsmanship.

Moreover, the Romney who is criticizing Trump has had the first part of an election cycle to see how this businessman would run the country. President Romney could give a sugar-free Rice Krispies treat if citizen Trump goes on bilking construction companies on the Eastern seaboard. Citizen Romney has every reason to be concerned about America going under the thumb of a tariff-happy strongman who threatens his enemies with IRS audits.

I’m not screaming anything.  I’m just calling him what he announces himself to be.  He’s clearly not a Republican, so what should I call him?  He likes to refer to the Presidency as a “reign,” so should I call him a candidate for King?
