PC Insanity Run Amok, Amok, Amok

shutterstock_190412831First, kudos to you if you caught the reference to one of the great Halloween movies. Second, let’s talk about the latest installment of PC insanity now happening at Wisconsin high schools across the state.

In what many are panning as ludicrous, the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) has come out with a list of words/chants/actions that they have decided are both offensive and disrespectful to other students, players, and officials during athletic events.

Here are just a few of my favorites … but will give you the link so you can chose your own top five.

  1. Singing the song “Na-Na-Na-Na/Na-Na-Na-Na/Hey-hey/Goodbye.”
  2. “Booing of any kind” (keep in mind, this is at sporting events).
  3. “Push it, push it, push it” (someone better notify Salt-N-Pepa).
  4. Waving arms or making movements or sudden noises in an attempt to distract an opponent” (Yes, you read that correctly; The Wave = Bad).
  5. Chanting “U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A.”

One article asks what exactly was the goal here from the WIAA and was it to ruin competitiveness in sports? Included in the article is that a three-sport high school athlete was suspended from five games after tweeting her thoughts on the rules emailed to students in December.

I was curious how the guidelines could be applied to playing songs like “We Will Rock You” or “We Are the Champions,” but the WIAA did not respond to a request for comment.

Back in high school our cheerleaders did an opponent-taunting one that went something like:

    Ug!
    You’re Ugly!
    U-G-L-Y Ugly!

I feel saddened that such genuine and authentic expressions of feelings are no longer allowed.

Katie, are you in Wisconsin yourself?  If so, you may want to know that there will be a Ricochet Meetup in Madison in April.

Not only is the “USA” chant on the list, but here’s the context:

“U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A” or any acronym of derogatory language or innuendo”

Soooo “U-S-A” takes it’s place among acronyms of “derogatory language.”  This makes it pretty clear where this group is coming from.  Expressions of patriotism?  Can’t have that.

I could be talked into an embargo on the Bananarama version of “Na, Na, Na, Na” but the original by Steam stays.

My simple rule: Any organization banning the American flag or patriotic chants (U-S-A, U-S-A) should forfeit any government money. Won’t work on the federal level right now I know, but Scott Walker is still governor in Wisconsin, right? Someone who lives there should suggest to him the state pull funding from the WIAA until they reverse this policy.

I’ve got a feeling that Paul Ryan funded this along with everything else the left wanted.

I haven’t heard about this till today. Surprised I hadn’t heard about it from the kids by mocking it.

We don’t use “Warm Up the Bus” around here–hadn’t heard it–but we’re going to start.

I went to Aycock Junior High which were known as the Owls.  One of our cheers went like this:

    “We . . . we are . . . the mighty mighty . . . Owls [pronounced “Ow-wells”]

    And we . . . don’t give . . . a hoot about who?  YOU!”

It would probably be banned as being non-inclusive.

There was a similar chant in our neck of the woods…

    U-G-L-Y
    You ain't got no alibi.
    You ugly. You ugly.
    M-A-M-A
You know how you got that way.
    You mama. You mama.

We also let the players dress in cheerleader skirts and act goofy at pep-assemblies.
I wonder if that would that be banned now?

The players in skirts would be encouraged, and eventually mandated.  The Ugly chant not so much.

One of the worst things about this story is that all of this stuff is child’s play. For example, I went to a private Protestant all-male school. Our main rival in sports, at least locally, was the metro’s all-male Catholic high school. Both schools were expensive by local standards, though ours was more expensive. We used to yell things about eating fish on Friday with sexual innuendos at them. They used to yell homosexual innuendos at us because we were preppy and clean. This was standard fare. The worst it got was at a basketball game on our turf:

Catholic School crowd: “This is our house!” (because they were winning by a wide margin)

Our school’s crowd: “You can’t afford it!”

    Catholic school crowd: “Daddy’s money!”

Our school’s crowd: “Pays your father!”

Now this we got a chiding for on Monday. The only other time we got rebuked by the administration for jeering was because of reports (never confirmed) of racial slurs when we played a very good (though we won) team in a neighboring state that was almost completely black. Now that wouldn’t make much sense, because half of our team was black too, but I wasn’t at that game, so I can’t be sure. My point is that the stuff they’re banning is small potatoes, and harmless ones at that.

Hmmm. While I was in Groton, Ct, attending either enlisted submarine school or missile technician “A” school, a class marched in formation through the intersection by the galley with the cadence caller bellowing out:

    If you like your [expletive] tight;

Stomp your left and drag your right!

Followed by the BOOM-scrape-BOOM-scrape-step-step-BOOM-scrape that accompanies this particular cadence. Everyone had a good time, except the female LCDR who was sitting at the stop sign as they marched through. The whole class was restricted for a month.

This has no bearing on the silliness in Wisconsin, but it’s close enough for me to get the story off.

Some feminist battle-axes are now trying to ban cheerleading in the NFL, thus proving Rush Limbaugh’s Undeniable Truth of Life #24: “Feminism was established to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society.”

Should those harpies be successful, I’ll say the following to the NFL:

At a USL* game against Rice in the 70’s the following chant was heard:

“What comes out of a Chinaman’s [behind]?”

    “Rice! Rice!”**

These people don’t know what offensive is.

*Now UL-Lafayette, or “U-La-La” as my mom dubbed it.

**The irony that Cajuns eat almost as much rice per capita as Asians do was apparently lost on them.

Well, the high school cheerleaders may be shackled by the imposition of new regs, but will the rowdy crowds at the games hold back?

    Doubt it.

In fact, we should start showing up at high school basketball games and disrupting the correctness.

Lets see what Scott Walker does about it. I just never bought the story he was as conservative as everyone made him out to be . If he  knocks the association down a peg or two then to me that will be one more action proving he is more than a fiscal conservative.

Ruin competitiveness in sports!?! Certainly not!

“To be clear, there was no language in our correspondence with the school that stated to ‘take care of this,’” Clark said. “That determination is for the member school to address. But these issues, like other sportsmanship issues brought to our attention, are shared with our members for their awareness.”

    See?

It is all about sharing issues for everyone’s awareness.

You will be made to care.

The Wave is not an attempt to distract an opponent, The Wave is an attempt to distract the crowd from an otherwise boring game.
