Video: Mizzou Protest Shuts Down First Amendment

A young photojournalist tried to do his job today and take pictures of a protest movement roiling the University of Missouri. The protest, named #ConcernedStudent1950, complains of institutionalized racism at the Mizzou campus and society at large. Their disruption has gotten so bad, the university president decided to resign earlier today. Since this is obviously news, sympathetic reporters are there to spread the protesters’ progressive message. Unfortunately for the journalists, Mizzou doesn’t seem to teach its students about the First Amendment.

It’s not even that coherent. It’s pure infantilism. Notice the people shoving the photographer and yelling at him not to touch them. It reminds of that scene from Ocean’s Eleven where the two young guys are fighting because one was sticking his finger in the other guy’s face, or this from the Sherlock Holmes film:

    From the Mizzou J-School website:

Today, some of the best journalists in the world have learned their profession through the Missouri Method, which provides practical hands-on training in real-world news media and a strategic communication agency. Top editors, reporters and other executives say Missouri graduates are among the best prepared to work and contribute to the organization from their first day on the job.

I think the shine is coming off the ‘Missouri Method’, unless you are gunning for a job at the NYT.

Even Maoists know that they won’t find any people more sympathetic to their cause than the media and college administrators/professors.

We’ve reached the point where it’s in the best interest of the left to elect a Republican President. They had 8 glorious years of Dubya to rage against, but under Obama, they’ve had increasingly less to complain about. Consequently, they’ve been forced to eat their own in order to fuel the rage that sustains them. If Hillary wins in 2016, it’ll be shortly followed by a full-fledged schism on the left.

Young Stalinists in action!  Of course, it is somewhat funny that people think this is new behavior for Campus Leftists…

The only difference is that University Presidents used to pay them little heed.

The Left is learning they have built a monster; one that will be impossible to appease or placate. The more they surrender, the more emboldened the monster becomes.

Colleges have become the worlds most expensive day care.  The only solution is for parents to stop writing checks to schools that practice infantilization of students.

Social media was a game changer. That, and in this case, student extortionists disguised as football players.

Right, it has. But that’s precisely who these people are. 80% of these “protesters” aren’t students there, that much is for sure (this is what they always do in these sort of protests. They gather up all the idiots from all around).

I fear (well I know) this is going to degenerate into a “college is bad” sort of argument from the right, as it always does. The reality is 99.99% of the people in any university (except maybe Oberlin) have no interest in these antics. It’s usually a few dozen students from the sociology department who are professional agitators.

UM Columbia has 35,000 students. A few dozen protesters are hardly representative.

Look at the location of this “protest” It’s in the lawn between the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the College of Business. I can only imagine the laughing going on inside the College of Business as they look out their windows.

The bigger idiot is of course the President who resigned over this.

Right. Agreed. Only the silliest things rise out of Facebook and Twitter feeds. We haven’t learned yet not to pay attention to them. Unfortunately, schools care about their reputations, so bad publicity even from a tiny number of idiots, becomes a serious matter. It’s the same for companies, unfortunately (look at Walmart). But that’s life.

The left never sleeps, never rests, never retreats. It is a false religion and they are will to endure immeasurable short-term scorn and ridicule to further their agenda.

They cannot win on principle or argument so they must exhaust all possible means to end any dissenting argument. If they are the only ones left on the field they win by forfeiture – their only credible means.

Consequently, they’ve been forced to eat their own in order to fuel the rage that sustains them. If Hillary wins in 2016, it’ll be shortly followed by a full-fledged schism on the left.

This is a hallmark of 5th generation warfare and/or terrorism. Sacrificing some of your own, willingly or otherwise, is a small price to further the zealous cause.

The only way I know to combat this peacefully is starve it of resources and that means getting the federal government completely out of education and education lending. Right now there is no interest in rocking that boat by the republican party.

That will surely do wonder’s for America’s economy and its competitiveness in the world. Kill off 99.99% of productive endeavour to get at the 0.01% of sociology majors. Sounds like a plan.

Is this really something to get wound up about?  Silly self important kids trying for some reason to keep a student reporter from photographing their consciousness raising demonstration.   The University President deserves approbation for resigning instead of calling the football players’ bluff, and the administration will undoubtedly respond to the demonstration is a way that deserves even more scorn.  But how is this different than business as usual?  It doesn’t strike me as a first amendment issue until it is the government or the University restricting speech.  Which happens, but let’s keep our powder dry for that eventuality.

Hey lady, the word you’re looking for here is: Brownshirts.

What a ghastly place the academy has become.  It’s so bad that tearing it down and starting over again seems like the only rational option.  Because nothing going on there seems to reflect learning, teaching, and reality.

Why do you think we can only produce productive  people with the federal government involved in education? Because the federal government has a such a good track record in similar endeavors?

Yep. Must be so. 2 dozen students in a place of 35,000 students are protesting. Lets nuke the whole place.

    Sounds reasonable.

You haven’t been to college lately if you think .01% is the only non-competitive activity occurring.

There’s a reason why unemployment and under-employment is rampant for young college grads.  Because what they are learning is useless.

That’s not what I said. The Federal government is simply a funding mechanism. As are State governments too. Combined they represent about 20-30% of higher ed funding.

And yes, it does have a good track record. Funding for basic scientific research is one of those things it actually does pretty well.

I work in a university. And no, evidence suggest you’re flat out wrong. Unemployment is significantly lower than for non college grads, and salaries are significantly higher (which makes the underemployment argument pointless).

    Please, facts.

You should go back and read your own comment because that is precisely what you said in response to my suggesting we eliminate any and all federal involvement in education.

While we are at it, let’s end funding for scientific research as well. If it merits research the free market for profit or philanthropy will ensure it is funded and held accountable.
