Actress Launches Failed ‘Gotcha’ Moment on Ted Cruz

A minor celebrity named Ellen Page had a brilliant idea. She would go to some flyover state called “Iowa,” find dumb, evil, bigot Senator Ted Cruz, and confront him over his backward views on gay rights. Better yet, she would bring her own camera crew to document every second of her courageous destruction of the christofascist Texan and the snake-handling hill people he represents. America would finally see a white Hollywood millionaire standing up to small-town evangelical bakers and octogenarian florists.

Unfortunately for Page, Sen. Cruz had no clue who she was and never realized he was supposed to be intimidated by the 28-year-old.

(ABC News’ embedding software doesn’t play well with our site. If the video clip above doesn’t display, you can view the original here.)

Cruz calmly explained his well-considered position for about four minutes, and stressed the importance of religious liberty and the protection of LGBT people from harm, especially by the hands of Iran and ISIS. And he did all this while holding a hot pork chop.

Sheltered progressives are often shocked when conservatives don’t conform to the stereotype. Anyone who had conducted the most elementary research would have known Cruz is no dummy and that he would easily best even some of the brightest minds on the left. This actress created the gotcha moment for an upcoming web series produced by Vice Media. It will be interesting to find out how much ends on the cutting room floor.

Mister Magic:Often turned off by his bombast, I was pleased to see Cruz use calm persuasive logic. He’s the clear winner

When Cruz debates and discusses issues with other people, he is completely courteous and gracious, while being relentless in his logic and reason.  If Trump had been in that confrontation I imagine he would have called Ms. Page a loser or something similar.

Cruz actually comes off better in one-on-one interviews with hostile questioners than in speeches, where he has a preacher vibe that can turn people off.

He comes right up to the edge of insincere earnestness that makes people think he is trying to sell them something. It doesn’t bother me because I know his actions/words are sincere.

Even if she was out of her depth, kudos to Page for making the effort. More than most celebrities would do.

Cruz came off fine here.  He deflected the question skillfully as a politician.

I’m horrified to find out that Ellen Page is 28. She thinks at the level of a thirteen year old. It’s scary.

I think he comes off better with hostile questioners than with friendly questioners. I remember listening to his interview with Jay Nordlinger at CPAC and thinking, “Man, even in a one-on-one interview he speaks entirely in applause lines.” Thankfully that proved inaccurate.

In my experience, the hard left in a nutshell consists of arrested development: it’s 1) all about teh feelz, 2) to the extent there’s any cause/effect reasoning going on at all, it’s strictly first-order (A living wage will reduce poverty! Regulate speech and the social problems it signifies are solved! Give our enemies what they say they want and they’ll stop being our enemies)! It’s profoundly magical thinking, literally a case of saying the right thing being the right thing, regardless of demonstrable—and demonstrated—unintended consequences (Obamacare costs) or even outright failure (War on Poverty).

This would be merely risible if the morons weren’t so numerous, didn’t gain political power, and didn’t also have a demonstrated totalitarian bent. It might also help if the U.S. had anything remotely resembling a serious opposition party. Instead we have the crapless feckweasel Progressive-lite party who equally demonstrably are committed to driving the nation over the cliff at 55 MPH instead of 60, marginalize the only candidates who take the Constitution and Bill of Rights seriously and make an effort to reach out to the African-Americans who should be the party’s most natural constituents, and take a flip-flopping populist blowhard with no political experience seriously.

Frank Soto:He did fine. Unfortunately,if you ask the average person under 30 what happened here, they will say Page destroyed a bigoted Ted Cruz.

Salon has put Cruz in his place over this. They tweeted “An oblivious Ted Cruz straightsplains to Ellen Page about Christians being persecuted by the LGBTQ community”

Maybe Page should have been clued in that liberal icon lawyer and professor Alan Dershowitz said that Ted Cruz was the smartest student he ever had.

LGBTQ? What does the “Q” stand for? I didn’t realize another letter had been added…

I dunno why so few media reports are pointing out this (IMHO very salient) fact.

Demonstrating the Borg-like mentality of political correctness, I have some liberal acquaintances that just a decade or two ago, made fun of the whole “LGBT-add-letters-later” thing. They’d type things like “LGBTBBQ” in IRC and texts, making fun of it, even thought they were pretty gay-friendly.

Now? They religiously recognize the progressive rules of language and text concerning gay movements. The very same liberals that were typing “LGBTBBQ” 15 years ago will now attack you as a homophobe if you do the same thing today. Once a narrative sets in, the devotion must be complete, no matter what you previously thought or said. Violate the narrative in any way, and you’re an apostate bigot.

Mate De:When he was talking about Iran executing gays and Obama wanting to give that regime $100 billion to help prop them back up, she counters with Jamaica, WHAT? It’s like she never heard of Iran.

We’re talking about the same ideology that spawns movements like Queers for Palestine, never stopping to think for even a second what would happen to them if they staged a gay rights march in Gaza. Cognitive Dissonance is a feature, not a bug.

But yes all over TMZ, they will title the video ‘lesbian actress destroys anti gay ted Cruz’

Absolutely. It’s the Jon Stewart effect (and before him, Noam Chomsky). If one of my tribe is attacking, then he’s always cool and always right and destroyed your guy. Even if my guy came off like a complete fool in reality.

Had their been no war on poverty, capitalism would have still managed to wipe out poverty.
