In the evening he is scheduled to travel to New Hampshire, the first-in-the-nation primary that is critical to his fortune in the race, to begin a five-day swing of campaign events.
Mr. Christie’s brash persona, his success in trimming benefits of public-sector workers, and his aggres-sive antiunion positions have drawn the attention of GOP leaders hungry for a fiscal-ori-ented centrist Republican with governing experience and a strong stage presence. National donors flew to New Jersey to court Mr. Christie to run as an alternative to Mitt Romney in 2012.
