This Probably Counts as a Macroaggression
Christina Hoff Sommers is probably the sharpest writer and thinker on modern feminism that we have on our side of the fight — which means that she must be resisted and declared an Enemy of the People.
When Sommers went to speak to a group of Republican and Libertarian students at Oberlin College last month, a coalition of fragile porcelain dolls concerned students posted — I am not making this up — “A Love Letter to Ourselves” (probably a serviceable title for any document produced by this cohort), calling Sommers a “rape denialist” because she has questioned the assertion that one in five women on college campuses have been sexually assaulted (Yes, it did include trigger warnings).
On Friday, “the Oberlin College Choir” posted their response to the controversy on YouTube. I don’t see much in the way of evidence that this actually came from within Oberlin, but it’s worthwhile nonetheless:

Like.
This is at Oberlin!?!
There may yet still be hope for the halls of academia.
My sentiments exactly. On politically correct campuses, there is no force as subversive as mockery. Something similar just happened at Columbia University.
What constitutes a “group” of Republicans/Libertarians at Oberlin? Do they all fit in an SUV?
Check your patriarchal, heteronormative, cissexist, hegemonic white male privilege, Senik. Free speech, as Chris Cuomo can tell you, does not include your hate speech.
You’re just plain mean.
A Porsche 911.
My favorite line about the real world–assuming they will take me. Snowflakes don’t last long in spring, summer or fall. Last I checked, there are 4 seasons. That might be an upside of global warming–melting the special snowflakes.
Hah. That is some sweet action.
21 years later and we’re still acting out PCU.
With all appreciation for the content of the song, I’m guessing an actual Oberlin College Choir could put forward a stronger performance musically. (Then again, if they put it together in an hour, you never know.)
In my Peace Corps training we actually had a session in which we were instructed to write love letters to ourselves. Happily nobody was checking our work. The same woman who set us this exercise also offered a list of recommended “self-esteem building” activities, which included developing (and performing!) a self-marriage ceremony. The romance continues.
(For the record, not all elements of Peace Corps training were so ridiculous. We also learned languages, and tips for not getting kidnapped by Islamic militants. But there are definitely, as one would expect, some massive flakes in that organization.)
Almost certainly not. I doubt anyone at Oberlin had anything to do with this.
You try to plan a month of fun and festivities and someone goes and invites a woman like that. This so called “real world” where you have to defend your beliefs with facts and proof, even when you and your friends have already come to consensus, doesn’t sound like much fun.
I noticed there weren’t any freshmen. There were sophomores, juniors, seniors, and first-years.
Wishful thinking, Troy. Wishful thinking…
The creepy thing is these delicate flowers would be the first to be violent if they were given any real power.
Hey Troy,
As fate would have it, my daughter Randy is *in* the Oberlin College Choir. She is just finishing her freshman year. She says that the video “it is entirely fake” (sorry). She also adds “And we wouldn’t sound that awful.” (showing that she knows what’s important).
She also (bragging a little here) is the co-chair of the debate team at Oberlin and says that she brought the whole team to Sommers’ talk. She claims that the talk was not very good. Her comments were in fact rather scathing so better not to repeat them here. She claims that the critique is not a matter of ideology.
But then, who is out there *pretending* to be the Oberlin College Choir???
That’s not a macroaggression. Posting this is a macroagression.
But as you say the piece is worthwhile nonetheless.
…now there is some feedback to the actual Oberlin College Choir I wonder how that will evolve??
Michael Stopa: “it is entirely fake”
That is no excuse. The Choir will have to attend sensitivity classes for engaging in similar-name ism.
Eh. If you’re a musician, it is important.
Ah, Western Culture. And in the long run, these people are winning:
