Has Google Informed the Veterans of the Okinawa Campaign that the War Ended on May 8th, 1945?
So, I was going to add, maybe someone should Google “date WWII ended” but, um……
Update…..it looks like the answer to the end of WWII has updated on Google. Now a “date WWII ended” query does not come out and say WWII ended on May 8th but goes back to reference that the “war in Europe” ended on May 8, 1945 still without any reference to the Pacific – and there is a picture from what appears to be D-Day (June 6, 1944, of course). If the machines are going to take over, could they at least get the historical facts right first?

‘Course I recall an “Integrative Studies” class I took in which a significant proportion of my classmates apparently believed that Germany was an American ally in WWII.
It was at Meathead U, and in one of the Meatheadiest of classes, but still.
To most people history began the day that they were born.
I see all types of historical nonsense – especially on the History Channel. Like 50 star flags on WWII uniforms.
At least we can still say VE Day. VJ Day is racist now, no?
They still haven’t done a Doodle honoring D-Day.
This is one of the many reasons I use something other than Google.
Hell, the same people telling google when WW II ended, are telling Larry Kudlow we still need to surrender the Mexican American war and everyone else that just like the UN fixed the problems of war, genocide, etc. they will tell us when we won the climate change war.

I’m passionately incoherent. It’s a gift. Along the way I thought about Oceania – Eurasia war and how so many people say if we don’t grant amnesty we’ll lose our chance to ever run crony capitalism again.

We actually did that in grade school. But that was back when education approached real education. You were probably cheated out of all that.
We diagrammed sentences when I was in school. I couldn’t do it now.
Note that the date is written as “8 May 1945.” It was written by a European probably. Most Americans would have written it “May 8, 1945.” Eurocentrism strikes again!
At the same time, I would caution that we usually date the start of the war as September 1, 1939, even though the Chinese and Japanese portion of the conflict goes back for nearly a decade before.
Which only serves as a reminder that the war was not all about Hitler, but numerous horrific things coalescing at the same time.

It was said in jest! Although if I was pushed, I think I might be able – maybe.
I tend to write dates that way still. But not always. But I once did. Date, Month, Year. I even wrote it 8/5/45 – made people crazy (me too sometimes). But my mother was born in Europe.
Yeah, but you put the question mark at the beginning of the sentence, too.

I’m not sure I get the point of this. VE-Day was not THE end, but it was at the end of the war. Indeed, one could say everything after D-Day was the end of the war. After all, we’re at the end of the republic. That doesn’t mean someone declares it a dictatorship or empire today, but it won’t be that long compared to the 240 years of earlier history.
