They Said If I Voted Republican in 2012, Cultural Issues Would Dominate Politics and They Were Right!
In the years following the election of President Obama, Instapundit made a habit of pointing out how dire predictions made by the Left often came true. The horrors were visited upon us not by John McCain or Mitt Romney, but by Obama himself. Here’s a sampling of what I’m talking about.
One of the things we’ve heard repeatedly is that the GOP wants to fight the culture wars and people just don’t want to talk about those things. Plenty of free advice has dispensed over the years saying that if Republicans want to ever win a Presidential election again, they better stop talking about social issues – American’s doesn’t want to hear it. Well, perhaps the Democrats should take that heed that advice themselves as we approach the 2016 elections.
A string of recent stories have highlighted the Left’s engagement in the culture wars and their desire to push social issues to the forefront of people’s minds.
- John’s Hopkins’ Student Government Association banned Chick-Fil-A from campus citing “microaggression.” Who knew chicken sandwiches were so mean?
- A gay businessman dared to host an event in his home with Ted Cruz and the fallout was swift and severe. Great piece in the Federalist on this topic, by the way.
- And perhaps most ominously for Democrats were Hillary Clinton’s comments: “Laws have to be backed up with resources and political will,” she explained. “And deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed.” Does she really want to use the power of government to force people to change their religious beliefs? That hardly seems in tune with the views of the American people.
It seems to me that social issues will be front and center in the 2016 campaign, but not because Republicans are pushing them.

The difference between the left and right is that the left is always waging the culture war. If you change the culture then it will change the politics. If more people are dependent on government because their family life is not working, then you have changed politics. If more people are dependent on the government to enforce a moral view that is at odds with reality, then you changed politics.
Cultural squishes on the conservative side need to understand that if you want less government and free markets, you need strong families and a moral outlook that is at peace with reality.
