Meetup in Kansas City!

Robin-hood-disneyscreencaps.com-4724June 15 marks 800 years since the signing of the Magna Carta, one of the most important documents in history. In honor of the fellow at the right agreeing to respect his noblemen: Mr. Amy, James of England, and I are hosting a Ricochet Meetup in Kansas City!

This June has a number of anniversaries of important events in the spread of freedom and American identity at 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, 1600, 3200, and 6400 years ago. We assume that everyone will be celebrating 800 years of the Magna Carta, so we’re not trying to compete on the day; we’re taking the closest weekend. The Waterloo celebration later in the week may mean that you’re already partied out that week; if so, we understand, just as those of you who get to celebrate the Berlin Wall finally falling to Peter’s words have a great reason not to attend other, inferior parties. An informal poll, though, suggests that few of you are celebrating the 400 years since Pocahontas gave birth to a founding father of Virginia (and James would like to suggest there is nothing more pro-freedom than marrying an Englishman). Come celebrate the invention of beer, or any of the other anniversaries, but more importantly, come and celebrate Ricochet. A meetup where we have coffee really is like having coffee with friends.

On June 13th, we will be at Penn Valley Park in beautiful midtown Kansas City. After a recitation of the Magna Carta’s text — it’s not much longer than the Declaration of Independence — under a garden of memorial oak trees, we will tour Liberty Memorial and WWI museum. Afterwards, we’ll have a delightful picnic at the shelter and fun in the sun in one of Kansas City’s great parks.

Afterwards, we can head a few blocks south to the Country Club Plaza — America’s first planned shopping development — for drinks, desserts, and more delightful conversation. RSVP by sending me an Private Message, which means you have to be a member.

[Editor’s Note: Don’t forget that you can get your first month on us.]

Come join us for fun and history!

As of right now, we do not have an official hotel with discount pricing. The challenge with mid-town Kansas City is that hotels cluster at pricy and sketchy with very little in between. Two I would recommend would be 816 Hotel, currently renting for $138/night that weekend with 6 rooms left, or Best Western Seville Plaza, currently renting for $120/night.

I don’t think I can make this, but I’ll keep it in mind.  This sounds like a terrific plan.  What time of day will this start?

When I think of the Magna Carta, I always think about Steyn’s point about peasants being granted access to “the king’s forest”… while modern Americans are forbidden from “public” park lands unless facilitated by government overseers (rangers).

Also, I must capitalize on this opportunity to share one of my favorite songs, which befits your great announcement:

    Oo-de-lally!

Since Aaron started it, here’s another vid to kick off all the fun and history (just ignore the bit about Eleanor Roosevelt and the UN).

My travel schedule always revolves around whether I’m doing a show or not.  If I don’t book anything for mid-June, I’ll definitely plan a visit to the family in KC around this.   Will PM you when I know for sure.    (You know, in all the time I’ve spent in that town, I have yet to visit the Liberty Memorial.  It’s always on my list and yet, somehow, it never works out.)

I went to one of the last blues and jazz festivals at the Liberty Memorial in 2001.  The 3rd week of July and it never topped 75 degrees the entire weekend.  Great music (Indigenous, Gov’t Mule, Hubert Sumlin, and many I forget names–been too long!)  If I can convince my husband, sound like a great weekend!

Sorry I can’t make it. My only trip to KC was many, many years ago via train from Chicago, in the care of two of my aunts. We stayed at the Muehlbach. On the way, we saw Harry Truman in the train’s dining car. The aunts sent me over to his table to get his autograph. He was very nice. I have no idea what happened to the autograph.

Anyone who hasn’t been to the WWI Museum is in for a treat. Don’t know yet if I can come but I will if I can.

I live in Kansas City and will be thrilled to participate. I would also be available to help organize. Loose park is just south of the Plaza and has a large shelter if needed. It was the scene of an offshoot of the Battle of Westport during the civil war. There are numerous points of interest established as educational and historical highlights around the park. I hope to hear from you, Amy.

Excellent! I’m trying to nail down locations and restaurants to make this more a three-day thing. Where abouts in the city? I’m in Roeland Park, Heart of America is in the Northland, and Flownover is up there too, I think closer to St. Joe.

Funny – I misread your locale, when I glanced at that comment, as “Roeland Park, Heart of America” and immediately started musing on which KC suburbs  might fight you for that title.

Well, technically, I’m in KCK, but I’m practically on the county line and have to drive through Roeland Park to get to my apartment complex. Roeland Park defines the approximate location in a way that KCK/Wyandotte County just doesn’t.

Amy, sorry for the delay in responding. I live just south of the Plaza in an area called Brookside.

I’ve block off the weekend and I’m looking at diving on down and maybe taking in a Cardinal vs. Royals game on the way in.  If anyone is interesting in a little baseball before.  I’ll swing in and pick you up.

I probably won’t know until the day before whether the standby flights will be open enough to get my family there. I hope so.

Midget Faded Rattlesnake:We may be able to make it.

My knee surgery scheduled yesterday was canceled because complications occurred during anesthesia.

We hope to reschedule it soon, but the fact that it’s been pushed back at all makes it less likely we’ll be able to travel by mid-June.
