Margaret, Meryl, Me, and Makeup: Another Day at Fox News

For those of you who haven’t had your fill, here I am again in Fox makeup talking about Meryl Streep’s makeup and the Margaret Thatcher movie preview. (I managed to slip in a few words about the importance of privatizing major industries and public utilities while I was at it.)

Scene from the Green Room:

Makeup artist: So, do you have any special makeup preferences?”

Me: Well, I usually don’t wear any at all, so I guess … you’re the expert …

Makeup artist: This is Fox News. We like hot.

Me: Can I quote you on that?

Makeup artist: Oh yeah.

Fox seems fond of a picture of Thatcher that must have been taken right about the time she left the public eye and she looks old and the stare does not look …its not vacant but its not penetrating…I wish they would use one from her more triumphant period. The Iron Lady could never be described as hot but they could do a better job for posterity.

How frustrating is it to try to cram all of your knowledge into four frequently interrupted minutes?

Hot makeup! And your points were good too. The bracelets are making too much noise.

A pleasure to see you in action in these clips, Claire. Not enough time or depth to get much out of the interview, of course, especially for someone like me who knows so little about Thatcher. It is enough of a tease to make me want to check out your book, however, so it’s a success on that front.

If I may make a small note on the presentation: the “clinky” jewelry is distracting. It took me most of the interview to figure out where the extraneous sounds were coming from. Once that was in order, I rewound and was able to enjoy the interview.

I really agree. And by the way, she could be and was described as hot. She once announced in parliament–speaking of inflation numbers–that she “had the latest red-hot figure.” She was momentarily puzzled by the hilarity.

It would be frustrating if I didn’t know that anyone who wants to know more can buy the book. I just see this as “advertising for the book.”

You did an outstanding job, Claire. What struck me initially was how your body posture just exuded a natural confidence. You also did a fine job responding to the questions with pith and clarity. Bang on. As for the bangles, well, I suppose it’s best not to rattle around the studio like the ghost of Jacob Marley. Lesson learned. FOX should know better anyway.

Love the hair. Nice dress, too. And, yes, Thatcher’s profound sex appeal to her contemporaries was something that surprised the heck out of me when I was reading There Is No Alternative: Why Margaret Thatcher Matters by Claire Berlinski, only $11.08 in paperback at Amazon.com.

Pretty is easy; to be “hot” a lady needs to be pretty and smart. I saw hot in these Fox clips.

Keep us updated on how well these Fox appearances improve sales of your book.

It has to be said that the service I receive from the basket-case bank I entrust with my money would have made me want to privatise it, had it been publicly owned. Well, it is now publicly owned, and the service has not improved one jot. I conclude that a rubbish institution is a rubbish institution, private or public. My views on Margaret Thatcher are too complex to air on a blog, but I do think Meryl Streep is wonderful. I hope I get on Fox News one day, as I too don’t wear make-up and fancy being hot for a night.

Bought at which Istanbul flea market?

My favorite picture of Lady Thatcher is where she is playing the piano for a bunch of stuffy-looking MoPs doing a sing-along. It is in my Dan Yergin Commanding Heights book, I don’t remember off-hand seeing it in There is No Alternative. If it wasn’t there, it should have been!

“Customers who bought this item also bought:”

    Why We Get Fat

I have absolutely no idea what to make of that.

Once the Kindle version of Claire’s book shows up, I’ll be the first one to buy it. Until then, I’ve pledged to only buy physical books used and for under $5.00.

On your second: pledged to whom and for what reason? (Just curious.)

sitting on my shelf waiting to be read, I’ve not got the time to give it right now, in January when things slow down at our retail liquor shop, I will have the time, and I am counting the days!!

Very well done. You got your points out quickly and kept control of the interview. You should do more TV. Or interview people for Ricochet over the Skype. Or maybe you need your own podcast. And you were hot. You should replace your Ricochet Picture with one from your Fox appearance.

The robust presence of testosterone-laden masculine manly men is terribly inhibiting for some. Maybe if you dialed it down a little.

    Never mind. Not possible.
