On the Worthlessness of the MSM

I kid you not — the biggest story on the homepage of CNN is an opinion piece on the “reality of Islamophobia.”

No where on CNN’s homepage is any mention whatsoever of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah addressing thousands of supporters in Beirut today calling for an end to free speech.  “All our people and governments must put pressure on the international community to issue international and national laws to criminalise insults of the three world religions,” he said.

Why read The Onion when you’ve got CNN?

UPDATE: Chris Grindstaff points out in the comments below that CNN has updated their homepage to include a story about Hassan Nasrallah.

Also, LSU evacuated its Baton Rouge campus today because of a bomb threat.

The Onion is funny because the stories have an air of wacky plausibility. They’re almost reasonable. CNN passed that station three stops back.

Gee, sounds like Nasrallah needs to give some heed to himself. He just managed to insult scores of religions that millions of other people consider sacred. What about Shinto or Bahai or animism or the worship of Gaia or crystals. That guy really needs some sensitivity training.

Diane Ellis, Ed.: “All our people and governments must put pressure on the international community to issue international and national laws to criminalise insults of the three world religions,” he said.

The Al Jazeera report you linked to gives the three world religions as Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.  But given his hatred of Israel and all things Jewish, did he really mean to include Judaism?  Or even Christianity?  Did he mean Islam, Buddism, and Hinduism?  or something else?

Oh, you know he just meant that he’s opposed to speech that’s critical of Islam, but he added the others to make his ridiculous demand sound more reasonable and universal.  But do you think this guy really has a problem with Ahmadinejad calling for the destruction of Israel? Fat chance.

And of course the story quotes Brian McLaren, one of the leaders of the liberal/postmodern “emergent” movement (now dying, praise God) within the Evangelical church.

McLaren lost any shred of credibility when he released his book “A New Kind of Christianity” a couple of years ago.

CNN is a “global network”, that is unprofitable in the US but very profitable overseas, see where this is going? Boycott Time Warner!

I’ll admit it, I have landmineophobia. So, if you see me flying through the air, in pieces, you’ll know I’ve overcome my fear of land mines.

Ricochet making a difference! It looks like someone at CNN may have read your post. There is a now an article at the top of their homepage about Nasrallah’s speech, and the Islamophobia essay has been moved down the page.

This is an issue which is not getting enough attention — not just that so many bomb threats have been made lately, but that universities continue to assume they are genuine and evacuate students. I understand the reasons (safety, avoiding lawsuits due to inaction). But if we jump every time someone threatens us…

It reminds me of how everyone was looking over their shoulder after 9/11. Terrorism changed America, and I’m not referring to government or politics.

Thank you for bringing this to folks attention. CNN’s coverage (or lack thereof) has been pretty bad – online anyway. That Islamophobia essay was front and center on their page at some point over the weekend too. I remember seeing it – and then seeing red. :-)

BTW, is it just me or are US news outlets not talking much about the Israel – Iran situation? I had to read in the UK Telegraph about all of the warships moving into the Straight of Hormuz. I haven’t seen anything about it on CNN.com or the Washington Post. Perhaps they’ve had stories on it, but if they have the stories aren’t very prominent.

He probably meant the three monotheistic religions, since the others aren’t even recognized as religions.Anyway, maybe we should not tolerate some other rights among those who abuse free speech.  The right to breath, for example.  Say, isn’t a violent attack on a foreign consulate an abuse of the right to free speech?

When mobs in US cities attack and kill Arab/Muslim diplomats and drag their bodies through the streets, then we can talk about “Islamophobia.”

Just a few quotes from the Quran, the ONLY book most of Islam can read, and the ONLY book most of Islam is taught from. Phobias can be very real.

Quotes from the Quran:Allah is an enemy to unbelievers. – Sura 2:98On unbelievers is the curse of Allah. – Sura 2:161Slay them wherever ye find them and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution is worse than slaughter. – 2:191Fight against them until idolatry is no more and Allah’s religion reigns supreme. (different translation: ) Fight them until there is no persecution and the religion is God’s entirely. – Sura 2:193 and 8:39Fighting is obligatory for you, much as you dislike it. – 2:216(different translation: ) Prescribed for you is fighting, though it is hateful to you.….. martyrs…. Enter heaven – Sura 3:140-43If you should die or be killed in the cause of Allah, His mercy and forgiveness would surely be better than all they riches they amass. If you should die or be killed, before Him you shall all be gathered. – 3:157

EJ:  All correct except that, while the fear may be “extreme” it’s actually “rational.” But that would mess up the narrative, wouldn’t it?  Because a “phobia” must be an irrational fear.

Almost everything that appears on CNN’s religion blog is completely infuriating.  I seem to remember Mollie having something on there awhile back.  I imagine she won’t be invited back.  It’s nice that they’re advertising their idiocy front and center.

The story doesn’t just quote Brian McLaren; it’s written by Brian McLaren.  I had a friend post a link to it on Facebook over the weekend and so I read it to find out what he says.  He’s fighting imaginary boogie-men from what I can tell.

Believe it or not, I actually love their religion section — it has some of the best stuff in the business, although it has some clinkers every once in a while, too. And while I did get people wishing me death from breast cancer when I wrote something for CNN, they didn’t actually track me down and try to kill me or anything.
