Good news for Habiba Soliman! As you dear readers may know, she wanted to train to be a doctor. But her father committed an act of terro…. (Sorry), her father is alleged to have done naughty things for reasons we can’t begin to guess, so now the meanie Trump administration wants to kick Habiba and the rest of her dreaming family out of the country. (Fortunately, one of our brave, Freedom-Fighting, lower-level judges has put a stop to this deportation madness for the moment.)
I just wanted to encourage you, Habiba. You may be unaware, but even if you are sent back to Egypt, there are schools that teach doctoring in that very country. I know, who would have thought?
But some may say, those schools aren’t as good as the ones in the U. S. of A. But only Islamophobic racists would even think such a thing. Muslims always have, and always will be, superior to Judeo-Christians in the maths and the sciences. These schools must be far better than ours in every area (maybe even in harassing Jewish students. If they have Jewish students. I haven’t Googled that yet.)
Anywho, Habiba, just wanted to brighten your day. Even if you should need to someday, forbid the thought, take leave of us and return to your homeland, your dream doesn’t have to die.
Published in General
Not to worry. A Federal judge, using his newfound powers as the superior authority of the Executive branch of the US Constitution, has blocked Habiba from being sent home where she belongs.
I don’t know how we got through all these years without such unaccountable, unelected direction from our betters.
In the USA, isn’t there normally a requirement to do undergrad work before starting medical school? It seems that this could be done in many countries, not just here. In fact, I beleve that her path to medical school would be shorter in Europe than here.
With that mascot, I kind of want to go to Cairo U.
If I ever decide to lie about having gone to college, I think I’ll declare that I went to Zagazig University. Then when they say I must be lying, there is no such place, I can prove that there is. They’ll be so astonished, they won’t even remember to ask for proof that I actually went there.

Great choices for any residency-challenged, documentation-challenged, American-adjacent, underwelcomed, person of non-citizenship. It turns out that there are universities in every country that has exported people to the US.
Cairo has a well-regarded med school.
If I were doing an Egyptian degree, archeology is the way to go. There has been a big push to tool up indigenous scientists because they feel embarrassed and resentful that Europeans and Americans have led the way for so long in uncovering ancient Egypt. New mega-museum projects, more government money and high quality university programs will make a big difference. Good on them. Up the mummies!–into museum displays.
Good point, but I think even with nationalized medicine there is more money to be made in that field. Socio-economic status is important to a lot of people.
I wonder, will there be more antisemitism at Cairo University or Harvard or Columbia?
Egyptians, like almost everybody else who identifies as Arab, will probably find ways to screw up a good thing. Currently bad politics, the vile and stupid Muslim Brotherhood (it started in Egypt), drastically reduced tourism, ….
Zahi Hawass made a lot happen. He appears in virtually every documentary about Egyptian archaeology you have ever seen. Made a lot of money, made money for Egypt, held the reins on all historical sites and was roundly hated as a result. See, this article.
Eustace, you overlooked two important Egyptian universities, Farouk U and its brother campus, Farouk U. Two.
