“Am I a Man or a Mouse?” WTH Ever Happened to “Little Marco?”

Full disclosure: I’ve always liked Marco Rubio. I thought that his backstory was incredibly inspiring, and thought that the 2016 brouhaha initiated by Chris Christie (“Who’s he?” the younger among you may ask) was undeserved and completely self-serving.

Chris Christie, who was also running for president at the time, chose to make fun of Rubio’s repeated assertions that Barack Obama “knows exactly what he’s doing,” at a time in which most of the Republican primary candidates (Lord knows why) were saying that the effects of Obama’s policies on the country were the result of incompetence rather than malice.

Does anyone think, in 2025, that was actually the case?

Where do I begin?  So funny in so many ways, from the start, when Rubio says:

I will say that if policy becomes, or politics becomes, who’s been in the Senate the longest, we should all rally around Joe Biden.  He’s been around a thousand years.  He’s passed hundreds of bills. And I don’t think any of us believe that Joe Biden should be President of the United States.  And lets dispense, once and for all, with this fiction that Barack Obama doesn’t know what he’s doing.  Barack Obama is undertaking a systematic attempt to change this country, to make America more like the rest of the world.”

Does anyone think, in 2025, that either of these things was not actually the case?

Unfortunately for Rubio, his timing and his social media affect were poor.

Christie was, at the time, perhaps the leader in the running for the media’s most mavericky Republican presidential candidate since John McCain had secured the nomination in 2008.  So the media felt justified in lining up behind Christie, and found themselves free to cover him with drooling affection, while waiting to see what happened next. Since what happened next largely involved Donald Trump, the media backed off, and Christie disappeared into the ether, other than as the object of some rather insulting memes.

And Christie has really not been heard from since.

Of course, Trump had to have his chew on Rubio at the time.  And so he did.

And yet, here’s Marco today:

Simply wonderful.  Some credit to Trump for appointing him SoS.  All credit to Marco for hanging in, for continuing to let his freak flag fly, and for being the man I always thought he was.

Marco is the kind of guy who brings a length of lead pipe to a congressional bun fight.

I have watched a few of Rubio’s interactions with Senate committee members and he runs all over them! He was my pick for Pres. before he withdrew, so I’m a long-time fan. I hope he continues to take them down!

He’ll be there running foreign policy long after Steve Witikoff and Adam Boehler have terminally screwed up and been shoved off into oblivion.

Those two characters won’t be gone soon enough, and they’ve already done a lot of damage, but I think Rubio is the adult who will be there to fix things up when they are done.

Just discussed this very topic with a friend. I mentioned that I was surprised and pleased with his intestinal fortitude (polite phrase for you know what). She wasn’t surprised. She wins.

Yes, but is there an adult in the room who will see that and boot those two incompetents out? I wish I could be more optimistic, but I can’t.

There is sooo much backstory with Rubio. He helped lead the Select Senate Committee Covering Conventional Pusillaniminity  (the SS/CCCP) while the collusion investigation shackled PDTv1. Rubio sat alongside Mark Warner, and they knew it all.

    I think he’s PDT’s most inspired choice.

I have not always been a Rubio fan. But this version of him is the best I have ever seen: a good and brave man on a righteous mission. Right now, Marco looks like one of the best Trump picks of all.

Has to be Vance/Rubio because Marco would be dependent on donors. That’s maybe why he seems a new/charged/purposeful person as SecState, he doesn’t have to worry about the US Chamber, et al.

Remember who was the GOPe’s candidate when Rubio first ran for Senate in 2010 (Charlie Crist)?

He was Trump’s first nominee, and he was confirmed by the Senate unanimously. He was a senator from 2011 through 2025. His fellow senators knew him very well. The one fact of his unanimous confirmation says a lot about him–his reasonableness, his conduct, his intelligence, and his trustworthiness.

I consider the secretary of state of be the second most important position in the U.S. government, right after president. In the organization of our government by the founders, the president was given the sole authority to conduct our foreign affairs. That was set up that way so that we would speak as one strong voice to all other countries. It is the secretary of state who manages those foreign affairs for the president.

His nomination and confirmation were an astounding historical event in relation to the contentious election of Donald Trump.

I disagree with Rubio on Ukraine, but I trust him to work through the Ukraine situation in such a way that some good will eventually result from his actions.

Frankly, I think he won the bout with Christie too….and of all the guys on that stage with Trump, who is the one who isn’t contributing in any way to the administration? Christie.
