Democrat voters are becoming as anti-American as Democrat leaders

An interesting article on Issues & Insights begins with a remarkable anecdote, from a town hall meeting that a Democrat U.S. Representative had with her supporters (emphasis mine):

At a town hall meeting last week, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez — one of the few moderate Democrats left in the world — made a perfectly common-sensical statement: “Americans believe that only U.S. citizens should be determining the outcome of American elections.”

She was greeted with a torrent of shouts, boos, and profanity, signs that said “shame” from her constituents, and was ushered out of room for “security reasons.”

Her statement would not appear to be controversial.  Americans should decide American elections.  Simple.

Surely her supporters would agree that Palestinians should decide Palestinian elections.  And Danes should decide Danish elections.  And Argentinians should decide Argentinian elections.  So why are they so violently opposed to Americans deciding American elections?

This is something that has worried me for some time.  Democrat voters seem to be becoming just as radical, and just as anti-American, as Democrat leaders.

The Democrat Party has always had a few Bernie / AOC types – left-wing ideologues who are so radical that they sound anti-American.  That is not new.

But this seems new – when Democrat VOTERS sound radical and anti-American.  Granted, this was just one isolated group, at this town hall.  But Democrat voters have become increasingly violent recently, from the Black Lives Matter riots a few years ago to burning Teslas today.

I’ve said before that the Democrat Party has spent decades building something that they cannot control.  And I think some Democrat leaders are probably starting to figure that out.  Although if they think they can ride the hatred and radicalism back into power, I think they’re willing to tolerate it for now.

Robespierre is probably nodding his head right now, with a grim smile on his face.  This probably looks familiar to him.

Because the Democrats have built something that they cannot possibly control.

Hang on tight – you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet…

The radical element controlling the Democrat narrative these days has no tolerance for any remotely normal ideas or people, especially when it comes to elected Democrats.

It seems likely that the “Democrats” who were pro-American are no longer Democrats, thereby reducing or eliminating that segment of the party.

I’m not sure it’s actual voters (mostly they just go along) but the young Turks of the Party sure have their positions locked in. It’s happened many times many other places and times but I never expected to be in a time when it was applied to me. I expect a summer/fall worse than 2020 and the ‘60’s.  The same ragged minions are waiting for their instructions.

Don’t the radicals have a “town hall meeting strategy” they have already been applying to Republicans, so maybe they do the same thing to a Democrat who gets out of line.

This is why I don’t have that much sympathy for folks like Bill Maher and J.K. Rowling.  They spent years unapologetically cheering for leftist causes and damning conservatives, and now they’re like, “Where did these extremists come from?” They were always there, you nitwit, and now they’ve metastasized.  Either you weren’t smart enough to see them or recognize their danger, or you accepted them as fellow strugglers against the hated status quo.  “But I didn’t intend this!”  Road to hell, and all that.

I keep hearing this phrase from people who believe that the administration’s actions are morally indefensible: “This is not America.” It is a strange thing to hear from 1619 people who believe that the USA itself morally indefensible, due to its unique historical evils.

The convenient waxing and waning of patriotism and pride is a good tell.

George Carlin was another.  People who are out there with leftist passion, and then when things go bad they pretend to be dispassionate observers who had nothing to do with it.

    Here’s the video:

I looked in the audience expecting to see a lot of young hippie types. It’s not a new thing that such types would hold views like this. But instead they just looked like mostly normal people.

Optimistically, I like to think their boos are just directed against the SAVE act and its voter ID requirements in general, not in favor of actually legalizing voting by foreigners.

No surprise. The lefty wing of their party is Marxist and has included their party as part of the “long march through the institutions.”  Even our political punditry has shown us the truth to the comment that institutions on the right will drift to the left. What attracts people to move left?

    Dr. Bastiat,

I watched this live and Jack Fowler has now made it public. It goes on for an hour and gets into the French verses US Revolution. It will answer some of your questions. I subscribe to Jack’s newsletter, Civil Thoughts (I recommend), and thus received an invite to watch the Zoom live last week.

Jack hosts one of VDH’s podcasts. He is a friend of we NR cruisers since he planned the cruises until Covid hit. The NR Institute (NRI) now plans them. Dan Mahoney is an NRI fellow and addresses religious influences.  I have done two small seminars with him on cruises and recommend his books (see below). “Prudence” also is something he looks for in leaders. The last book is his newest. It hasn’t arrived yet so I haven’t read it. It is tied to this podcast.

    Well, ok.  Maybe so.

But that’s not what she said.

As pointed out in this article:

Gluesenkamp Perez defended her decision, saying the intent was to protect trust in elections, not restrict access.

“Any idea that I am standing to disenfranchise people is (not informed),” she said. “I believe vehemently in having a system where Americans have an influence in who is represented.”

However, she acknowledged her belief that the legislation was deeply flawed, at one point calling it “a dumpster fire.”

One attendee shouted, “Then why did you vote for it?”

Gluesenkamp Perez cited a case in Oregon where hundreds of noncitizens were mistakenly registered to vote through the DMV. She stated such incidents contributed to public mistrust in elections, even if the impact was statistically small.

Her reasoning did little to dissuade the crowd’s anger. Among those left unsatisfied was Vancouver-area resident Nathan Hunter, who said the congresswoman’s explanation rang hollow.

I bolded that “mistakenly” above to point out that activities that Republicans describe as voter fraud, Ms. Perez apparently views as clerical errors.  I think she’s being very charitable.

But her point is valid – such things certainly do look bad, and they obviously make it more difficult to have faith in the security of our elections.  How many “clerical errors” don’t get caught, and don’t get publicized?  Presumably lots and lots.

Dr. Bastiat: Surely her supporters would agree that Palestinians should decide Palestinian elections.  And Danes should decide Danish elections.  And Argentinians should decide Argentinian elections.

According to the radical left, Palestinians should decide Israeli elections because the Palestinians are brown and the Israelis are white.

Same with illegal Latinos. Because Latinos are brown they should decide American elections.

Radical leftism is literally that dumb and racist.

Also, if Latino immigrants leaned Republican. They would be considered white. Even if they are primarily of African heritage.
