San Diego: Spring 2025
Big cat at the San Diego Zoo napping in his catwalk above visitors’ heads. I’ve noticed more than one large feline sleeping supine, with paws suspended. Just like a housecat.
The fort I mentioned in another post, which, according to my niece, had her covered in mud and screaming until her throat was hoarse.
Our household’s entry into the library bookmark contest. The member most interested in wolves created this.
A walk with my brother at Balboa Park. Lots of sketchiness on the trails, but it’s okay when walking with someone.
Working at the library. They have a soft chair with a side desk that can swing left or right, plus an ottoman. Comfortable seat, sunny views.
View from the backyard “office.”
Some flora in Rancho Santa Fe. We’d dropped my niece off at a birthday party in a gated community within a gated community and were going for a walk when these large thistles (or whatever they were) drew our attention. Honestly, I prefer the pleasant middle-class San Diego suburbs to the ostentatious structures in this otherwise barren landscape.
In person, the curves on these walking paths look dramatic with their loops and inclines. At the tops of the entry points, I think about being on a roller coaster as I swing into the path.
This snake caused a loud exchange between my niece and her friend. One child was insistent about not getting too close, and the other seemed determined to show her that he could get next to the creature if he wanted to. The snake didn’t know what to think. I believe this was the same excursion that involved a fight at the little library.
Spring walk.
My niece’s map illustrating a story she’s working on. The tale is modeled along the lines of the Warrior Cats series she loves.
More pictures to come!

“Bookmarks” are still a thing?
Well at least bookmark contests are still going.
I met a Lady once and when getting to know each other there were the typical questions:
Her: So…. What do You do for a living?
Me: I design bookmarks.
She looked at Me as if I was some space alien.
I love the bookmark, particularly in its attention to detail vis-a-vis the wolf’s Mary Jane shoes.
I get that even when I don’t say I design bookmarks.
Beautiful photo diary. Ice plant blooming in Coronado, San Diego, seen while biking a few weeks ago. Most spectacular colors I’ve ever seen:
During dinner at a conference at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe in the 1980s a slug crawled out of the centerpiece flowers onto the table. At the time the Inn proudly used native flowers from its own gardens in the decor as part of its casual local elegance atmosphere. (No one at the table got upset, as it showed the hotel was serious about its fresh decor. One of my peers just scooped up the slug on an index card and took it outside, and we all resumed dinner.)
Garter snake. Safe as houses.
Oh, good to know what kind it was.
Beautiful city in a beautiful time of year.
Coronado has changed a lot!
There is some structure here to work with, it could make the start of lean-to that will fall in after the third roof branch is put in place. That’s how you learn.
Yep! Making a fort is a great learning experience.
