Inquiring Minds Want to Know

In today’s local paper there was a report from the fire department. (The paper publishes all the fire and police calls for the city and county.) Apparently they were called to rescue a dog from the Mississippi River. It was a Husky which was about 10 feet out from shore and had broken through some ice. The Mississippi is pretty shallow in this area (with the exception of the ship canal), so at the most the depth was about 6 feet. Rather than launching a water rescue, the firemen threw some hot dogs onto the ice, walked away, and the dog followed the meat trail back to shore.

Questions:

  1. Do the firemen always carry hot dogs as part of their equipment? Like if they get hungry when there is a real fire, can they just take a break and have a hot dog cooked over an open flame?
  2. If that is the case, do they also carry marshmallows?
  3.  Do you think the dog may have done this before, and now knows how to get a free meal?

What thinkest thou, fellow Ricochetti?

I could see an otter doing this, but don’t think dogs would voluntarily go into ice water.

Reminds me of a video I saw recently, where a couple street cats were snarling at each other, and a woman broke them up and gave them food.  After that, supposedly whenever they saw her, they would start snarling at each other in order to get fed.

So, no ice water was involved, but they seemed to have her well trained.

    @ tex929rr?

Smart dog.  We actually carry a snack box on our rescue truck for long responses.  Granola bars, nuts and the most popular thing is chips.  The only water rescues we do are swift water, and we do all we can to keep our people out of the water because it’s so dangerous.  A neighboring department has a lake with a public swimming area and there is a lot of mayhem over there.

When I was a kid,  we had an Airdale that would swim in icy streams.

Yes, since hot dogs would be needing refrigeration.

Not if lakes and rivers are freezing.

Juliana, I’m just curious – where do you live? I ask because I’m two blocks away from the Mississippi.

I think Keokuk was made famous by its inclusion in the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

Hey, that’s great!! Not many people know that Lake City is, indeed, the birthplace of waterskiing – Ralph Samuelson was the first, in 1922. Are you in the area, Dave?

The grandson of a friend of mine is really into waterskiing. So it had come up in conversation.

I grew up in NW Illinois, not far from Lock & Dam 13, so the Mississippi is a bit bigger down there.
