Saturday Night Classics-“the Great Pretender” The Platters
This song was released in November 1955 and reached No. 1 on the The US R&B charts and No. 2 on the Billboard hot 100 in 1956. I discovered it while listening to my Mother’s record collection as a kid in the 70’s and it still gives me goosebumps when I haven’t heard it in awhile…

I was only eight years old when that song was released! Yeah, it seems like it was just yesterday in my mind. That was a great song! The lyrics make me wonder if it describes the emotions of a gay man. I had never thought about that previously.
I really don’t know if it is describing that in particular. I think that there could be dozens of interpretations.
The fellow certainly had pipes.
Excellent pick.
The follow-up to Only You, which it exceeded in popularity. Love them both. See the Bill Haley/Alan Freed flick Rock Around the Clock where The Platters did both.
Really enjoyed this one!
Love The Platters, especially Twilight Time.
