The 2024 BC Provincial Election

I frankly didn’t pay it any attention. It struck me as being a complete snooze. It was on October 19, and in its aftermath, it became very interesting. They’re still counting and recounting, there is still no declared winner…

The New Democrat Party (NDP): They’re exactly what they sound like. Marxists. Have elected 40 seats, Leading in 6 with 44.6% of the vote.

Conservative Party: Have elected 40 seats, Leading in 5, with 43.6% of the vote.

The Green Party: Have elected 2 seats, with 8.2% of the vote.

Some of the closest ridings include Juan de Fuca-Malahat with a 0.1% margin (23 votes) Surrey-Guildford with 0.5% margin (102 votes) and Kelowna Centre with a 0.6% margin (148 votes)

The final vote totals may not be published until Oct 28.

Let’s say things fall out as they now stand. The NDP would end up with 46 seats, the Conservatives with 45, and the Greens with 2… The Green Party finally has its dream situation; they’re literally the kingmakers. They would enjoy near limitless potential to blackmail (that’s such an ugly word!) or extort either of the 2 major parties to get their policy preferences and spending priorities into law.

Just some food for thought whilst contemplating your elections, as this one has kind of ended in a train wreck.

They all do, brother. It simply takes longer to recognize it with some of them. The whole problem is electing humans.

The damage they do will be hard to fix, if not impossible.

Conservatives did not exist there not that long ago.

This was a “divisive” and “bitter” and “partisan” election because a lot of people no longer believe that the left as the right to dictate both the terms an the outcomes of political discussion.

It will still take a lot more pain before Canadians throw off the leftist dictatorship, recover free speech and sane policy.

Do you like the parliamentary system? It seems like a mess to me.

Do you like the parliamentary system? It seems like a mess to me.

Most people looking at the US system see a mess.

You know Winston Churchill’s old line “Democracy is the worst system of government. Except for all the rest”.

The advantage that a parliamentary system has is simplicity. We have 1 ballot and vote for 1 person. Put an X in the box and its all settled. (usually) The Civics class on the system is pretty simple.

The real problem that our system has, is that there in no counter balance to representation by population. Alberta, for example has 37 seats in parliament. Ontario has 122.

The senate doesnt help. Its divided broadly into 4 regional groups of 24 seats each. The West, Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic… So there are 105 seats in the senate. The West, Ontario, Quebec, The Atlantic. The western 4 provinces get 6 seats each while Ontario and Quebec get 24 seats all to themselves. Newfoundland has 6 and each of the northern territories gets 1, to bring the total to 105.

Not that the senate really matters. All senators have been appointed for life (mandatory retirement at 75) by the Prime Minister. Justine Trudeau has been in office so long that he’s appointed 86 senators. So even after Trudeau is gone, he wont be gone. My worry is that the liberal senate will frustrate Pierre Poilievre’s  economic policies. and even with his super majority, he’ll have a difficult time passing anything… Fickle voters in Ontario will give him only 1 chance to fix everything and toss him after 1 term.

Trudeau broke Canada and I believe he left behind enough landmines that anyone attempting to fix it will be crushed in the process.

The whole post is interesting, but I had absolutely no idea about this. Wow.

    Thanks.

My rabid Democrat brother-in-law moved his whole family up to Vancouver BC because he thinks socialism is so great and also because he didn’t like who he was working for. He lasted a year. lol

I’m not sure he understood all of that.

Yea, Vancouver is not an ideal sample of a Canadian city anymore.

Just to be clear, this was 20 years ago.

My favorite statistic about Vancouver, is you aren’t supposed to rent out without telling the authorities but there’s so many people on the bus system they know they are doing it. lol

About 16 – 18 years ago, I would fly out to Vancouver for IT support work, about every 2 months.

On one of those trips everyone was making fun of one of the salesmen, who’d just bought a literal crack house for $450 K… The pictures of it were everything you would imagine… Toxic waste, needles, graffiti a total tear down… I havent spoken to him since I left that company 15 years ago, but I imagine he did very well on that deal…

(as a side note – why isnt graffiti from the same root as graphic? It seems weird that graffiti isnt graphiti)

They lived in a real POS house that they shouldn’t have sold. It was right before all the Chinese money came in when they sold it.

I will never forget going over the border with them and their dog. We had 18 inches of paperwork and the guy at the border was a real prick. He didn’t want to see any of it. lol

I don’t know why, but when you fly to Canada, the border people are really cool but when you drive, it’s a bitch. Same thing with the USA border people.

Because when you fly into a place, they think they’re safer from weapons and weirdos because the airport security already weeded out the travelers… Anyone can drive up to a highway boarder crossing with anything in the car…. So they’re far edgier and jumpy (mostly for no reason)…

It kind of is, it comes from the Greek through Italian. The ph changed to ff in the Italian.

It is the same root, the Greek graphein, to scratch, write, or draw. But graffito/graffiti came through the Italian, where they simplified spelling eventually. Graphic came from Greek to Latin and straight to English, so preserved the ph.

Nine days after election day, British Columbians know the final result of the 2024 provincial election.

The BC NDP is expected to form a majority government, securing the most votes in 47 ridings across the province.

In a statement late Monday afternoon, Eby said he had met with Lt.-Gov. Janet Austin, who asked him to form the next government.

“We are listening to the message voters sent with this close election, and will be getting to work on today’s tough challenges right away,” Eby said.

“British Columbians have asked us to work together and make life better for them. That is exactly what we intend to do. A majority of B.C. voters have elected a legislature that shares common values.”

The majority win comes after the final count of mail-in and absentee ballots revealed the NDP won the most votes in the riding of Surrey-Guildford, flipping the result from election night.

As of 5 p.m. NDP candidate Garry Begg led by 16 votes with fewer than 20 ballots remaining to be counted.

There will still be a judicial recount in Surrey-Guildford, although judicial recounts have historically not changed election results.

There are only 20 ballots left to count at 5 PM? You dont put in the extra 15 minutes and count them? Just call it a day at 5?
