The Most Beautiful Olympic Venue…

The most beautiful of the 2024 Olympic venues is found at “The end of the road,” 9,781 miles from Paris. Teahupo’o, Tahiti is located in the Windward Islands of French Polynesia and is hosting the Olympics surfing competition.

Let’s let Michel Bourez, longtime CT surfer and Tahitian surf legend, explain:

“Teahupo’o is one of the best waves, and the scariest waves, you could ever surf. The people need to know that wave is really dangerous. It’s really shallow. You can die out there. Teahupo’o can give you everything and take everything at the same time.”

Local knowledge of any surfing area is a must. The wave at Teahupo’o is not a wave for the amateur, even the best and most experienced surfer can lose their life trying to ride this wave.

I watched some of the women’s competition on Saturday on NBC’s Peacock streaming service. I found it a refreshing break from the bright lights of Paris. I have been to Paris, and it is indeed a beautiful city but if I was offered a choice of visiting the big city venues in any country or “the end of the road” I would choose the end of the road.

The venue looks beautiful. Unfortunately the reach of the bigots goes a long way.

Amazing video, Doug! Although I can’t imagine the people choosing to take on those waves!

I saw a mention of this yesterday.  I think it’s a brilliant idea to make the Olympics a truly “worldwide” event.  I encourage it, just as I encourage moving significant parts of the US Federal Government to areas other than Washington D.C.

And gosh, that scenery is beautiful.

Doug Watt: I found it a refreshing break from the bright lights of Paris.

The bright lights of Paris weren’t so bright last night.  There are (many) reports the city was hit by a massive power outage, although the mainstream media hasn’t been all that interested in following up.

    Here’s the Daily Mail coverage.

And a nod from MSNBC, in case you were inclined to pooh-pooh the whole thing.

    That is just amazing.  Unreal.

    Unbelievable.

I comprehensively detest the Olympics. It’s worse than the waste of money it is. It’s one of the most awful things on the planet.

Pro tip: Many if not most ‘Olympic’ sports hold annual or biennial ‘Worlds’ that feature the same athletes, without the corruption, media hype and politics of the Olympic games. And in most cases the venues and accommodations are less overloaded as well. Of course, YMMV, particularly if soccer is your thing.
