Saturday Night Classics — A Song for You

From 1970, Leon Russell’s A Song for You, called “a plea for forgiveness and understanding from an estranged lover.” Russell was an early member of the legendary Wrecking Crew, the musicians behind a multitude of 60s and 70s hits, before branching out on a solo career.

This has always been one of my wife’s favorites. She calls it “mood music,” IYKWIM.

I think Willie Nelson has called this one of his all-time favorite songs.

I was able to see him live at a place called New George’s in the Eighties.

For whatever reason, when my mom came to visit in California, she bought me tickets to venues in San Rafael – I don’t know why. (When I was a teen, she wished nothing more than for me to stay as far away from rock ‘n roll as possible. But once I in my 30’s, she knocked herself out getting me to shows.)

I remember him playing “On a Tightrope,” as well as many of these:

I’ve always loved this song, but never heard the original.
