Benefits of a Near Death Experience

Through most great tragedies there are sometimes speckles of good. I do believe President Trump has come out of this assassination attempt a better man. I heard someone call him Trump 3.0. I like that.

I have no doubt that during his preparation for the debate, he agreed that he needed to tone it down a bit. No nasty comments, no calling names. (Well, keep it to a minimum anyway.) An attack dog Trump is a bit much, but nobody wants a sleepy Trump either. That’s just the art of politics.

Since his shooting, he seems to be a changed man. You can read it on his face. When he says he’s only here through the Grace of God, I think he sincerely means it. What led up to that point is what it is. What happened during and after that moment can be life-changing. Just a slight twist of the head on a whim was the difference between life and death. It was the difference between a busy news week and an all-out civil war.

I had one of those moments. I was supposed to be on Flight 175 to California on 9/11 but God told me, don’t go. Not verbally, but it was an overwhelming feeling that outweighed rational thought. My boss threatened to fire me, and I told him to do what he had to do. I painted the kitchen. My classmate Brian Sweeney wasn’t so lucky.

This experience and Trump 3.0’s were very traumatic events. I think that makes you reflect on it even more. I’ve had other near-death experiences, but they didn’t have a life-changing impact. I once slipped on the ice on a pond when I was about 10, and split my forehead open. The state trooper wouldn’t wait for the ambulance, and I remember squirting blood all over his car. (I still feel bad for whoever had to clean that up.)

I’m sure all of us have had them, even if you don’t know it. Maybe you went through an intersection thirty seconds before a fatal car accident. Maybe something else. Just getting up every morning is an immense gift. I have a new appreciation for it. Every day.

Will Trump being shot make him a better president? I’d like to find out.

The democrats are going to do their best to provoke or set off crazy Trump.   Trump needs to be measured,  maybe use Reagan’s line–“There you go again…”

He did. Even if he agreed to behave that way I’m good with that. I think that mellow Trump was different than the mellow-determined Trump we’ve seen after being shot. I suppose a bullet through the ear would do that.

Dodging death, Trump realizes every day from here on out is bonus time, a free gift. He may think he is given that extra time to do something specific and he needs to figure out what that is. He may be also feeling a bit of joy and inner peace.  It will fade but never go away.

He probably is a better man.

Or  . . . he will think that he’s personally protected by a legion of angels, confirming his view of himself as the anointed savior of the nation, the one indispensable man raise up by God Himself to rule us.  Such an experience might increase his arrogance and egotism.

I don’t write this to claim that such a thing has been Trump’s reaction.  It is a logical reaction to an experience like Trump’s.  I cannot yet tell how he has changed, if at all.

I would say one thing.  It seems to me that the viewpoint expressed in the OP is that Trump will become humble.

Does that seem likely to you?  If so, I’ve got some oceanfront property here in Arizona . . .

I saw a recent clip at one of his rallies in which he had a lot of fun with the audience making fun of his own hairdo. That earned a lot of respect from me. Basically, I don’t much care for a person who can’t laugh at him/herself.

For instance, there is a clip of Dolly Parton telling here audience, “It takes a lot of money to look as cheap as I do!”

I should have made the silhouette yellow instead of black. That would have been funnier. Oh well.
