Big Numbers

Mrs. Pessimist’s 75th birthday was a few days ago. Our 55th wedding anniversary was five days before that. We made no special celebratory plans. Our 50th anniversary seemed special and we hosted a large home Catholic mass for that occasion. This year Mrs. Pessimist and I found time to reflect on the blessings we have shared over the past 55 years but we don’t really need to talk much about the passage of time. We just count our blessings and move on.

When we look back at how young, naive and optimistic we were then it doesn’t seem strange because somehow, despite my pseudonym, we still feel young and optimistic about our future. We spent our honeymoon in a 10-dollar-a-night motel in St. Augustine, FL, but had to cut it short because I had a major allergic reaction to shrimp and had to have IV steroids for anaphylaxis. Maybe that should have been a warning but it was just the start of a great life together.

75 and 55 are just numbers.

I do miss eating shrimp. Maybe in my next life.

Way to go Southern! You and the Mrs. are very blessed, even without the shrimp. As their name indicates, they are just a small thing to do without 😊😊😊, especially when gaining a lifetime of loving companionship. I’ve got you by a few years of age but you’ve got me by a few years of marriage. We will be celebrating our 40th this summer.

Looks like your wife, SQ and I are the same age.  In a prior life (when I was in my 20’s) I worked as a social worker. At one point I was certifying people for the food stamp program. A very sweet old lady (I would guess, 75!) came in for an interview.  She loved to talk and it was fun listening to her. She had left this rural county and had gone to New York and became a dancer. She had returned to her home county for retirement. During her telling of her story she said, “You know, I don’t feel any different now than when I was in my 20’s”. It seemed to me to be a silly statement because she was OLD! Now I know EXACTLY what she was talking about. Correct, SP, it is just a number. And as SQ says, Aint life grand!
