Cookeville Meetup – 2024

Thanks for the custom graphic, EJ!

Last year I hosted a Ricochet Meetup in my new hometown of Cookeville, TN.  I was only planning for a one-night stand, but several people said they were coming from several hundred miles away, so we made it a whole-weekend affair.  I’m not expecting people coming from that far this time, so I am just planning a Friday night meetup on June 14th, which is National Bourbon Day.  If this doesn’t bring @drbastiat back to Tennessee, I don’t know what will.

If there is enough interest in expanding it into Saturday, we’ll figure out something to do.  Everyone really enjoyed the night we went to Crawdaddy’s West Side Grill, and they do have a pretty good selection of bourbons, so that seems like a natural choice for location.  We’ll decide on the exact time when I know who is coming and when they expect to get to town.

A note on getting to Cookeville:

Coming from the north is rough – lots of hills and valleys, definitely not to be done at night.    Next time I come down, I might come early, head to Memphis, see Graceland, then take the interstate across.  Although taking the main route through Kentucky gets off right by Mammoth Cave, so it could be a nice place to stop .

The area is gorgeous, but I will not be down this year.

Yeah, the most direct route coming from your part of the country gives you some awesome, winding country roads through hilly country.  A lot of fun in a sports car during the daylight.  But if that’s not your bag, head for Nashville, then take Interstate 40 to Cookeville.

I guess the closest airport is Nashville?

How long a drive would it be from the airport to your place?

Yes, the Nashville airport is the closest one.  According to Google Maps, it is a 1 hour, 6 minute drive.

I’m still thinking about coming solo.  I don’t know if our girls have anything planned for me on Father’s Day (June 16th) or not.  Even so, I could go back on Saturday.  Stay tuned!

Crap.  We have guests coming that weekend – including some from Tennessee, as luck would have it.

So I will certainly be celebrating National Bourbon Day, as I often do.  And I will be celebrating it with some friends from Tennessee.  But, unfortunately, not IN Tennessee…

I look forward to meeting you soon, Randy!  Maybe in the fall.

Hold a meetup at Hilton Head.

    Blast. Maybe next year.

In a related note: Are you going to LibertyCon this year?

No.  I am under the impression that because they have a strict limit on the number of memberships they sell each time, it is difficult to get in unless you are perched at your computer right when sales open up.  We did go to ChattaCon this year, and may very well go again next year.  A few of us from Ricochet are going to Archon in October.

That’s a good idea!  Good place for one – nice place to visit.

Not in the summer.  It’s miserable here in the summer.  Which is when all the tourists come – it’s the weirdest thing.  Then in September, the weather gets better, all the tourists leave, and it gets really nice here.

Let me see what I can do…

That sounds like a fine idea!  I would ask that you not do it the first weekend of October.  @stad and @neutralobserver live less than 3 hours from Hilton Head and I’m sure they would want to go to your meetup, as would I.  But we’re all going to be in Saint Louis in early October.

Charleston would be nice too.  And the advice to go off-season still stands . . .

I’m afraid I’m going to have to pass.  It’s rare that I get the house entirely to myself (NO will be on the NR cruise), and I want to enjoy the solitude as long as I can!
