Lent is when I bring my pipe to work, so I can torment the smokers.
That’s right, I’m evil.
Will “go Sajak” during Holy Week…Couldn’t quite do without my RicoFriends for all of Lent; sacrifice, yes; masochism, no. Thanks for this one, J. !
We’re Orthodox. ‘Nuff said.
Those Eastern Christians: Absolutely humorless when it comes to the Great Fast. Yeesh. ;)
Those two facts fit together. There are 6 Sundays of Lent, and Sundays are never fast days. 46-6=40 days of fasting.
Sure, doesn’t everyone?
You probably also know that the Jewish calendar is a hybrid lunar/solar calendar. Months are based on cycles of the moon, and then an extra “leap month” is inserted regularly to keep the lunar year from drifting too far out of sync with the solar year. In ancient times this was done by observing whether the first new moon of the year fell before or after the spring equinox.
Passover falls in the middle of the first month of the Jewish year, and therefore during the first full moon after the equinox. Hence early Christians began celebrating Easter on the Sunday after Passover, and used the Paschal Full Moon as a way to figure out the date of Passover each year.
Liberals do seem to regard the giving of someone else’s money away (stimulus, Obamacare) as almsgiving, but it is emphatically not. Something some of our more liberal bishops should keep in mind when they advocate for government spending on social programs (that and the fact that most don’t seem to work)…….
Lent is when I re-discover how much time I waste playing Solitaire on the computer while slow sites (NR’s The Corner, for example) download. JMath
