O.J. Simpson Dies at 76

The Simpson family has announced the passing of Orenthal James Simpson, the superstar running back whose position as an all-American hero shifted dramatically after being charged with the murder of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, nearly 30 years ago.

At the University of Southern California, Simpson was a two-time unanimous All-American; establishing the single-season rushing record in 1968, finishing with 1,709 yards. He won the Heisman Trophy that year and would be selected first in the 1969 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills. “Juice” would go on to being named MVP in 1973 after being the first to break the 2,000 rushing-yard threshold, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.

On June 12, 1994, Brown and Goldman were stabbed to death outside her condo in Brentwood. Simpson was a person of interest. He was scheduled to turn himself in on June 17th, but instead led officers of the Los Angeles Police Department on a low-speed chase throughout the city. The live coverage of the chase was viewed by an estimated 95 million.

“The Trial of the Century” began early the following year, concluding with Simpson’s acquittal. The reaction of the public varied profoundly.

Simpson would face a civil lawsuit from the Goldman family in 1997, being found liable for more than $33 million. He would have a number of run-ins with the law before facing another major prosecution after participating in the robbery of two memorabilia dealers in Las Vegas. He was convicted on 12 counts of armed robbery and kidnapping, sentenced to 33 years in prison. He was released on parole in 2017.

    Via Instapundit:

UPDATE: Found via Joel Engel, the New York Times’ obit for Simpson contains this showstopping moment:

O.J. Simpson, who ran to fame on the football field, made fortunes as a Black all-American in movies, advertising and television, and was acquitted of killing his former wife and her friend in a 1995 trial in Los Angeles that mesmerized the nation, died on Wednesday. He was 76.

The cause was cancer, his family announced on social media. The announcement did not say where he died.

A jury in the murder trial, which held up a cracked mirror to Black and white America, cleared Mr. Simpson, but the case ruined his world.

Oh.  The murder trial ruined his world.

I almost never celebrate anyone’s death, but I think the world is now much better off with a double-murderer in the grave, especially one who never paid for his crimes nor admitted them.  I don’t feel guilty about being pleased by this.

This is nearly totally off-topic, but the original home in which John Heisman was born, is about a mile down the street from me.   There is a historical marker in front of the tiny house.  It is regrettable that one of the Heisman Trophy winners went on to be a heinous criminal.

It seemed everyone here in L.A., especially in The Industry including most TV drama writers, was fixated by the Simpson criminal trial (11/94-10/95).

Many who watched the first trial on TV were surprised by the verdict. Invisible on TV, of course, was the jury, composed of six black females, two black males, two Hispanics, one half-Native-American male, and one white female.

Unlike the first trial, which was held downtown so the D.A. could have easy access to all the cameras, the civil trial was held in Santa Monica.

I was a juror in a murder case being tried in the adjacent court room in Santa Monica. Around the same time every day came the lunch break for both trials. It was weird seeing him escorted outside at the next door, separated from the row of press vans and satellite uplinks.

His jury, with a civil trial’s different standard and a very different jury, found him legally responsible for the killing of his ex Nicole and Ronald Goldman.

(After a three week trial, our jury quickly found our defendant not guilty, a clear case of #2A self-defense.)

It’s a darn shame he never got the chance to catch the real killer.

Maybe he will have the time now if there are no golf courses to distract him.

I don’t say this about many people, but I hope OJ’s cancer was slow and painful.

I was young when the murders and the trial happened. Can’t recall them at all, but I knew Brown and Simpson’s son for a while before I left Tallahassee in 2010. We were part of a more-than-somewhat troubled network of friends.

I was with some high school buddies one weekend when a couple bruised and bloodied guys came in. Everyone asked about how they got that way, and, as Justin put it, “We were out at [such ‘n such place] and these guys started talking about O. J. Simpson. I told them that he’s my dad and they didn’t like that.”

We hung out a few times after that. He was generous, gregarious, likable. But we were never close pals. I asked the friend of mine who knew him better than I did what Justin thought about the case against his father.

“He says he didn’t do it, and I want to believe him.”

    Quite the dilemma.

    Prayers for the Simpson family.

The prosecution was incompetent. You have someone with the same hand size as OJ try on a new version of his gloves. You don’t allow him to take medicine to make his hands swell and then try on the actual bloody gloves. A picture later emerged of OJ wearing the rare shoes that he claimed he didn’t own.

Yeah that all sounds like some of those Norm Macdonald jokes.  “Hey, where did you find those?  Those are my lucky stabbing gloves!”

You are correct about the incompetent prosecution and the gloves, but I don’t think it would have mattered.  The jury was biased and trying to protect their own famous Black guy.  There was such a mountain of clear evidence that a seven year-old child could have gotten the correct verdict.  Joe Biden in his current mentally impaired state could have presented the prosecution’s case and gotten a conviction within two weeks if the jury had been unbiased.

Yesterday on her Newsmax show Greta pointed out that in the civil trial deposition the evidence of the bloody Bruno Magli shoes, and Simpson’s denial then admission about ever owning them when confronted with the picture all came into evidence.

There are still some “OJ deniers” out there, but we never hear them called it.

But they seemed to be out of order.  The “Murder is now legal in California” needs to come AFTER the trial/verdict.
