A Sad Day in the Diocese of Tyler, Texas

I woke up this morning to this email link from LifeSiteNews.

Pope Francis has removed our good and faithful bishop, Joseph Strickland. This is devastating news to me and to all of us in the Diocese of Tyler, Texas. Bishop Strickland is one of the few bishops in the USA who actually practice what they preach. I’m so angry right now I don’t know what to say.

From the email link:

Bishop Joseph Strickland is being cruelly removed from his diocese by Pope Francis, despite being America’s most faithful shepherd.

This merciless attack on Catholic orthodoxy by Pope Francis demands a prayerful response today, so please sign our petition pledging to pray for Bishop Strickland as Pope Francis removes him from the Diocese of Tyler, Texas. We will be presenting Bishop Strickland with your prayer pledges, so sign up now!

The most stunning thing is that Bp. Strickland’s Diocese of Tyler has one of the highest vocations per capita in the United States.

Bp. Strickland has led the diocese for over ten years and been lauded by faithful Catholics for his promotion of love for Christ in the Eucharist and traditional Catholic teachings. But he is now being cancelled for, among other things, defending the Catholic Church against error.

The Vatican has had Bp. Strickland in their crosshairs for sometime, not least because, like St. Paul corrected St. Peter, Strickland publicly corrected several heterodox statements from Pope Francis.

Known as ”America’s bishop”, he has been outspoken in defending life and family, and has insisted that Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament be respected, which led him to refuse to give pro-abortion politicians Holy Communion.

Bp. Strickland has been fearless in his fight for fidelity to the teachings of the Catholic Church. In a recent episode of The Bishop Strickland Show, presented by LifeSiteNews, Bishop Strickland states that he is willing to suffer martyrdom, red or white, for defending the truths of the Catholic faith.

His unwavering dedication to promoting Jesus Christ and His Truth has had a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals.

We stand with Bishop Joseph Strickland, his love for Christ in the Eucharist, his devotion to Our Lady and the selfless work he has undertaken to foster greater fidelity among the clergy and even the Pope.

Please share this petition TODAY with your friends and family. We must pray for Bishop Strickland in this most painful trial.

I encourage all the Catholics on Ricochet and others of goodwill to sign the petition at the link and let Pope Francis know he has made a terrible mistake. Thank you and please pray for Bishop Strickland.

My wife and I attended a Rosary rally for Bishop Strickland today at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Tyler, TX. Hundreds (~500) joined in the procession around the Cathedral and downtown Tyler. It was very peaceful and prayerful. Lots of local police shielding us from traffic and what looked like 4 Feds following us around – you’ve seen the memes of these guys – short hair, mirror sunglasses, khakis, and blue shirts. There was only one person there backing the Holy Father’s actions. A great morning.

I didn’t know how to translate “pray for him” as a response.  Now I do, and I greatly appreciate the efficacy of this sort of prayer.

Hope you all had a great time, too!  Looks nice.

Saint Padre Pio spent years in effective arrest in his monk’s cell by order of his bishop, who was involved in protecting bad priests. The Lord’s response was frequent gifts of bilocation. Our good Lord gifted the good padre with gifts of bilocation, so while obediently occupying his cell, he was also recognized as an anonymous bystander in the Pope’s court, among many other things. Maybe the padre’s bishop was an early pioneer in inductive theology.

Bishop Strickland is in very good company in the annals of good clergy persecuted by the Church.

Dutch bishop comes to the defense of Bishop Strickland.

The dismissal of U.S. Bishop Joseph Strickland from the Diocese of Tyler, Texas, remains a strange story. As a bishop, Strickland is known for being humble, balanced, and faithful to the Church. Oh, and law-abiding too. Which is why he accepted his dismissal. His response is in no way hostile to the pope. He is simply asking for prayer and [for Catholics] to remain faithful to the Church.

A visitation took place, and as a result Strickland was asked to resign. That he did not do. The shepherd did not want to leave his flock on its own. No specific charges were made. Strickland was not even given the opportunity to be heard. This is something Pope Francis has done before: signing the decision himself. Since the pope is the highest authority, no appeal or defense is possible. A canonical procedure would be in order, though. It is extremely unusual to be deprived of a canonical procedure. These are methods we might expect to see in North Korea, or Rome in the days of Nero. It really seems as if there are no valid reasons. At the end of the day, Strickland holds traditional views and has criticized the way things are going at the Vatican now and then. That is apparently reason enough to sack him as Bishop of Tyler. Where is Rome now with its synodal church, with the church that listens, with The Church of Mercy? Rome is acting in total contradiction to what it is itself proclaiming.

He wrote a new constitution for the Order of Malta, because anything that old isn’t written to be in line with the pronouncements and prophecies of St. Karl of Trier.

I visited the site of the miracle at Trier!  I have a photo of me preparing (pretending) to throw an iPhone through the window.  Christmas Market 2014, and I learned the joy of mulled wine on a miserable rainy cold day. Tourists with umbrellas sploshing through the ruins of Roman hypocausts.  They were warm, thousands of years ago, and we froze.

There is a reason a book was written about Pope Francis called The Dictator Pope.

A letter to the flock in Tyler, Texas from Bishop Joseph Strickland. Boy howdy does the Church need more men like this.
