The Most Bigoted Tweet Evar

This was US Rep Max Miller (R-OH) in response to a Tweet (or is it Xeet) by Lizzie Marbach

There’s no hope for any of us outside of having faith in Jesus Christ alone.

Who is Lizzie Marbach? She has done work for the Ohio GOP in the past and worked on the Trump campaign, but is mostly known (according to Bing) as a pro-life activist.

Who is Max Miller? Well, he is a former Trump aide who was appointed to the Holocaust Memorial Council in 2020 (Miller is Jewish). He won his House seat in 2022 and has been in Congress since 2023.

Oddly, Ilhan Omar has criticized Rep. Miller for his demand that Ms. Marback delete her “bigoted” Xeet, saying:

“No! Stating the core beliefs or principles of your faith isn’t bigoted as Lizzie did, its religious freedom and no one should be scolded for that,” Omar replied.

I give Omar credit for defending religious liberty.  Miller…well, he has apologized

“I posted something earlier that conveyed a message I did not intend. I will not try to hide my mistake or run from it. I sincerely apologize to Lizzie and to everyone who read my post.”

To Ms. Marbach’s credit, she has accepted his apology.  I also give Rep. Miller credit for not deleting his Xeet and accepting the opprobrium it has created.  I hope he has learned from this.

How dare you post a tweet-based political disagreement without a clear, identifiable villain.

Worse, it exemplifies prudence, temperance, and probably several other -nces. It is almost…heart-warming.

This kind of post has no place on the internet. Shame on you.

Why shouldn’t she tweet her belief? She doesn’t seem to be confused about anything. I don’t know if she’s Catholic but  a Catholic might tweet:

    Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus.

    What is wrong with that?

So Lizzie didn’t tweet her Christianity on the Holocaust memorial website or something mean like that? She just expressed normal Christian belief?

I’m not defending his comment, but some Jews can be overly sensitive when Christians say you’re going to hell because you don’t believe in Jesus. They take it very personally.

Me, I don’t care what others say about my relationship with G-d.

Susan – I agree with you that I don’t care what others say about my relationship with G-d.

I think what Christians are saying in the statement that Jesus is the only means to Heaven is that Jesus is G-d and Savior.  No one sneaks into Heaven unbeknownst to G-d.  However, G-d is merciful and who is saved is up to Him alone.  For instance, the Catholic Church will say that a saint is in Heaven, but never presumes that a soul is in Hell (but I’m betting Judas and Luther are there.  I had to mention Luther just to stir up the 30 Years War again).

PS I’m a poor writer of theological ideas.

True.  They took it especially personally when Jesus said it.  They killed Him.  Stephen and James, too, and they tried to kill Paul.

    Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus.

    What is wrong with that?

What’s wrong is the lack of context. The church does NOT teach that only Catholics can be saved. Instead, she teaches that anyone who consistently seeks God and does good is a member of the Church “substantively if not formally,” in John Paul II’s words. So just tweeting “No Salvation Outside the Church” would be false statement.

That’s why social media causes depression.

Where did I say that only Catholics can be saved? The phrase Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus means that outside the Church there is no salvation. To put it differently no one will be saved outside of Jesus Christ because the Church is His Mystical Body. Catholics aren’t guaranteed salvation, and others are not excluded. You can read here about that in more detail:

    https://www.catholic.com/magazine/print-edition/who-can-be-saved-0

The Bible teaches that salvation is through Christ alone. In Acts 4:12, Peter says, “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

The Catholic Church affirms the truth of this statement, yet also teaches that non-believers can be saved:

“Those also can attain to everlasting salvation who through no fault of their own do not know the gospel of Christ or his Church, yet sincerely seek God and, moved by grace, strive by their deeds to do his will as it is known to them through the dictates of conscience. Nor does divine Providence deny the help necessary for salvation to those who, without blame on their part, have not yet arrived at an explicit knowledge of God, but who strive to live a good life, thanks to his grace” (Lumen Gentium, no. 16).

Edit #1 Not sure why the tweet doesn’t display (on my iPhone) – I used the copy link option as before – maybe it is a new X bug – it used to work with Twitter

Edit #2 Repasted from my computer and the tweet shows up. Interesting that the link from my computer uses twitter.com and from my iPhone used x.com

And she didn’t say it officially, from what I can tell. She was speaking as a private citizen. And they fired her for it.

A right-to-life group, which I assume leans conservative given Democrats’ love of killing babies, fired a woman for professing her religious beliefs.
