Contributor Post Created with Sketch. This Sends Me

Okay, people, Cruz Schmuz. Here’s what makes life worth living. A little girl appeared on Holland’s Got Talent and sang Puccini. I admit to being a sucker for these things. And is there anyone with soul so dead that he can watch this without wonder?

Peter, it’s simple. Sometimes I take time off from watching Ukrainian and Portugese TV!

I had the same reaction at first as others — could this be lip synching? Her voice is not that of a child in most respects. But having listened/watched 3 times (ok, 4), I think it’s genuine — and a little piece of Heaven. We don’t know these people, yet in a few seconds, we are moved to tears. Is that not what’s best about being human? This child not only has a gift, she IS a gift.

Mona I didn’t ever think it was possible but my kids were speechless for about a minute and a half watching that. They are 4 and 2. Thank you

Wow. I mean, wow. And yet, if my extremely rudimentary Dutch conveyed anything of her comments, it seems she disdains being a professional singer. Another wow.

If you like this, I suggest that you search YouTube for Jackie Evancho singing this same aria in June 2009. This is one of her first appearances at what appears to be a local (Pennsylvania?) contest. There are lots of clips of her other appearances (on America’s Got Talent, etc.) but nothing moves me like this performance. I have watched it dozens of times and it brings tears to my eyes every time…

What Dave said. Puccini is the best. It’s wonderful to see coming generations embracing truly great music amid the cacophony that is popular music today. Beautiful.

Ditto everything above (including a tear or two), and one more thing. Her stage presence was astonishing for one so young. The ease and grace with which she interacted with the panel (and interviewers prior to her performance) is rarely equaled by most 2-3 times her age.

Pure and happy — it’s amazing that a child can have that much control, and then be a giggling, skipping youngster hugging her family a minute after.

Sidenote – listening to her chatting merrily before the performance – doesn’t Dutch sound so much like English doubletalk? Her cadences and phrases seem so like an American child, just through a little filter. Delightful!

One person clicked on “dislike.” Need attention much?

This reminds me of that clip from Iran’s Got Talent where the little girl hit the high note from “Loving You” and her bomb vest went off, killing the first eight rows of the studio audience. She won.

That was amazing! I found myself tearing up when I heard this little girl hit the notes on an aria I adore. What a gift and so fortunate to find it so early. Can you imagine what she will do with the the right teachers in a few more years? Thank you for sharing this Mona. I just wish I spoke Dutch.

At 3:47, the camera cuts from the totally captivated audience to the presenter (?) backstage with the father. He obviously knows the music and is waiting to see how she does with the high note. You can see his amazement as she nails it perfectly.

As Leslie and Dave said above, God’s tender touch is evident.

    Thanks, Mona.

Oh, all right, I’ll confess: When I clicked on this, what I had in mind was Oscar Wilde’s response to the death of Little Nell in “David Copperfield”: A man would have to have a heart of stone to read it without laughing.

Silly me. This was magnificent–freakishly so, but still. It conquered me.

One lingering question, though, Mona: How does a wife, mother and noted political commentator have time to watch Dutch TV?

At the risk of being banished forever from Ricochet, didn’t it seem like she was lip synching? I mean, did that sound like a 9 year old girl?

If that was really her singing that was unbelievable!

That was a remarkable performance. But there’s a vast difference between singing a 3-4 minute aria for a TV show and touring. And record contracts generally require that the artist tour to promote the album. I’d hate to see a fine young voice wrecked or a little girl driven crazy by the stresses of stardom. Give her a chance to grow into her talent and one day she might be capable of this.

I’m saying it’s not lip-syncing, but a freakishly beautiful voice emanating from a cute nine-year-old girl.

What most impressed me (after the sheer beauty) was the way she seemed to feel the music as she sang it. True, she has little experience in the world, but the music seemed to flow from her soul.

One other comment: one must be tone deaf, hate music, or have a heart of stone not to be moved by Puccini sung well.

People said exactly the same thing about Jackie Evancho in 2009.

If what Amira said about herself here, though, is true, this is even more unbelievable.

Brain surgery, here I come! I’m sure I can do it if I just watch enough videos.
