The Man America Is Waiting For…

Longing for the days when the Secret Service’s biggest worry was greasing up the Presidential bathtub, America is ready to embrace William Howard Taft Chris Christie and put him in the Oval Office. So thinks the man who closed down lanes on the Fort Lee side of the George Washington Bridge to create traffic jams into NYC and hit the Jersey beaches closed to the general public during a government shutdown. He has decided that he truly is a man of the people – whether the people want him or not.

The Big Guy – no, not that one – has thrown his straw boater into the ring. And because history doesn’t repeat but often rhymes, Chief Justice John Roberts had better beware, too.

The guys on the 3 Martini lunch podcast assert the only reason Christie is getting into the race is to bring Trump down.  We don’t need revenge-seeking pols, book-deal promoters, and no-names running in the primary.  Only serious people should be allowed to get in.

This is why I’m in the race to win the Republican nomiation for the 2024 election.  Hey, why not?  I’m retired, and having my own jet would be kinda cool . . .

I don’t know if the story got national attention at the time, but back in the summer of 2017, amid a budget impasse, then Governor Christie closed nonessential State services.   This included State Parks and beaches … over a sweltering 4th of July weekend.    Standing firm on spending is good.    Shutting people out of 4th of July at the beach…that’s bad.   And … because he wasn’t done poking NJ voters in the eye yet … he took his own family to the NJ Governor’s summer house located at closed-to-everybody-else Island Beach State Park.   There is a picture taken from overhead (drone?  helo?) showing Chris Christie’s fat butt parked in a groaning beach chair with his family on an otherwise deserted beach enjoying the surf and the sun while the plebeians were denied access and sweated out the day at home.

That one image is all that’s needed to forever deny high office to Christie.   It’s like Mike Dukakis in the Spaceballs helmet.

And if he’s anything like Obama, it actually cost more to “close” things than to keep them open.

I would rather have Big Bill Taft than any of the current crop, largely because he didn’t want the job. He was a brilliant jurist. He and his wife are still beloved in the Phillipines, where he went to take over from the military governor after the Spanish-American War. They were a team; she was a very well-educated woman and an excellent writer. A lot of the reason that people think the Taft presidency was a flop was that Fannie Taft had a stroke two years into it, and Bill spent most of his time and energy helping to nurse her back to health.

    He was also quotable.

“Some are graduated from college summa cum laude, and some are graduated miriable dictu.”

“No tendency is quite so strong in human nature as the desire to lay down rules of conduct for other people.”

Some of these people just want to be addressed as “Presidential Candidate” by the media, perhaps for the rest of their lives.  That’s combined with, as Rob Long sometimes mentions, when they ask campaign consultants etc, “should I run for president?” what they hear is “Should I pay you millions of dollars, win or lose?” and the answer is ALWAYS “YES!”

His body weight isn’t the primary problem with Christie. It’s just the icing on the cake.

It’s his pomposity, his groveling, his duplicity, hypocrisy and that he is the first to cave when the media attacks his party for fiscal responsibility, social conservatism or taking a stand that offends the media’s culture. He heads for the hills when a strong gOp leader is attacked.

He did a good job when dealing with the NJ teachers’ union, and he backhanded a few partisan “journalists” while he was doing so. And that’s it. That is all I know about his conservative bona fides. I’ll listen to him, but if all he’s going to do is slam Trump, I won’t listen long

That’s the thing that really turned my stomach.  I don’t care that he hugged Obama.  But when the Democrats in Congress wanted to pass a hurricane relief bill that was loaded with pork for people nowhere near the hurricane zone, Republicans said no.  We’ll give relief money to actual storm victims, but you can’t pack it full of pork for your friends.  Chris Christie sided with the Democrats and bashed the Republicans.  I’m not saying he has to side with Republicans out of party loyalty, but if he were a principled fiscal conservative he would have taken their side.

It wasn’t the helmet. A perfectly standard combat vehicle crewman’s helmet (CVC). It was the desperate attempt to butch it up by having Dukakis ride in a tank, complete with his full name emblazoned on the CVC (nobody does that!) and coveralls. I don’t think it’s as bad as John Kerry in full dress hunting gear showing up for the press with a dead goose in his hand.
