Memorial Day Ceremony, Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola, 2023

I had the signal honor of attending the Memorial Day Ceremonies this morning at Barrancas National Cemetery at NAS Pensacola. To say that it was a moving and impressive solemn ceremony would be an understatement. I thought it would be fitting and proper to send along a few photos I took of the venue and the cemetery, a most sacred place and beautiful setting for a ceremony honoring those who, in the words of all the speakers this morning, are now “serving on the Staff of Our Supreme Commander.” God Bless Them and May They Rest In Peace.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Jim. I can imagine why it was so moving.

So is Our Supreme Commander Odin, or do you think that they had someone else in mind?

The Norse religion is the only one that I know in which heaven was reached by death in battle.  It was temporary, though, because the Norse gods ultimately lose in the battle of Ragnarok.  There may be other religions with this idea, though, because I don’t know them all.

I’m always a bit afraid when I try to encapsulate someone’s thoughts in a few words, but here goes.

Today we can look at those headstones and think that — it’s a very cold calculation — maybe it was worth it given all that those men secured for us. (Even if we piss it away.) We can possibly think that because, in the end, they won. What we forget is that their victory was not guaranteed. Against the odds they marched off and gave their best and, for some, their all. They enlisted for the duration. I stand in awe of their courage.

    I don’t think I can’t say much more.

Sometimes it’s OK not to post.

The picture of Hester Sr says he was a Navy LCDR but the picture shows him in an Army uniform. Curious.
