Smith College Out in Left Field

Just when it can’t get more ridiculous, the left seems once again to lower the bar even further. They love to be outrageous. It keeps us occupied on frivolous things rather than talking about important subjects like our southern border or the $220K debt per taxpayer.

Smith College in the western Mass town of Northampton has canceled the word ‘field.’

“We recognize that language is powerful and that phrases such as ‘going into the field’ or ‘fieldwork’ may hold negative associations,” the email said. “While this change may seem small, it is an action among many others, to keep us accountable to our values, to our students and to our Smith SSW community.”

As part of the language changes, most titles at the School of Social Work that contain the word “field,” such as field team or field education, have been altered with the Latin word practicum. Field instructors are now clinical supervisors. It also advises replacing the term “into the field” with “in the internship experience” and the “social work field” as “social work profession.”

Northampton is probably the most liberal town west of Worcester. I consider it P-town, Provincetown on the cape, without good restaurants or the ocean. I would say it’s a tie between there and Lenox in the Berkshires, where the elite sends their bratty kids away for the summer.

You can’t just say it needs to be deleted because it brings negative associations. So, by this drive-by assassination of the word field, we are supposed to just know black slaves have worked in a field, and therefore the field is at fault and must be eliminated. Say what you mean, Smith College. Seriously, they are like three year old’s with hands over their ears screaming LA LA LA LA, I can’t hear you.

Is this an extension on why guns are bad and not the people who do the killing?

You may recall a couple years ago, this is the college that openly practices segregation.

According to a report by the College Fix, Smith College has announced that it is going to introduce segregated housing options for sophomores, juniors, and seniors at the college. The first of these dormitories opened in September. One was designated for black students and the other for “students of color.”

So it’s blacks in one dorm, Latinos in another, and whites go away. They went on to say anyone can apply to live in the new residential communities. That’s like the car dealer commercials saying all loan applications will be considered.

Fenway Park left FIELD, Green Monstah

This place has serious issues. Who in their right mind would pay $85,762 per year to have their kid completely brainwashed?

Undergraduate Tuition

Tuition                               $61,260

Room and Board             $21,310 (restrictions apply)

Activities Fee                    $308

Health Insurance             $3,148

Total                                  $85,762

I’m not sure if that covers field work. We would be fielding questions here. Will Brady take the field this year? Ridiculous.

I grew up on a hog farm.  I spent my childhood working in fields.

Despite that, the English language doesn’t offend me.

I wonder how many students at Smith College have ever worked in a field?

I bet it’s somewhere around zero.

So it’s a ‘School of Social Work’. Social workers must make pretty good money to afford a quarter million dollar student loan.

I’ll tell you school boards all over are busily making up jobs so they can hire more social workers at $100k/year +.  The latest example is SAU21 in NH where they “neeeeddddddd” another social worker to “interface” with and “coordinate” mental health services for district children. Some of us think they also plan to introduce licensed therapist to provide “therapy” in schools outside the parents’ supervision. They don’t enforce existing disciplinary policies but neeeeddddd more social workers for all the mental health issues – drugs mostly in the most urban town closest the MA border and right on the drug route – and the sad girls in the high school.
If you want to know  where the bureaucracy in schools is – it’s social workers. They are making excellent money in NH.

Is there a word in the English language more fraught with privilege than “college?” It implies “higher” learning, and since there’s none of that going on at Smith, they should do away with the term.

My first teaching job was funded by a grant.  The school district spent the grant money on hiring an administrator from 110 Livingston Street, a.k.a. the NYC Board of Ed.  Her first spending priority was to buy about 60k of office furniture.  Per-pupil costs are so high because administrative positions are so plentiful.  This is also why Catholic schools and other small religious private schools generally do much more with much less…no bloat.

That’s a good point. They are in high demand in all the schools. Let’s not forget all the police officers that need to be deleted too.

You must be talking about Manchester. Certainly isn’t Bedford. No answer required.

The ESSA and other Fed statutes require so many “equity” type activities and the new trend (after common core failed) is competency based education which has lowered standards further. Student population down but bureaucrats up. SAU21 is Seacoast. Same trends as MA.

No, no, no!  They worked in a practicum and the practicum is at fault.

Wow.  That felt great.  Through a few keystrokes, I just made the world a better place.    I feel really good about myself.  I can’t believe how wonderful I am.

Nobody has yet congratulated me for being so good or recognized how much better I am than they are, yet dozens of people are sitting around me having coffee.  They apparently did not feel the cosmos shift as I made this important contribution to social justice.  I can’t believe it.  What a let down.

Our TV announcer for the OKC Thunder NBA team got fired for using the phrase “cotton pickin’” during a game. My very white mom not only used to utter that phrase, but also used to pick cotton.

I’ve noticed some on the Left repeating this myth that every facet of our society was built by oppressed minorities. Chinese singlehandedly built the railroads, blacks grew all the crops and built the White House. Whites just sat around eating box after box of Fiddle-Faddle, I guess. And cracked the whip.

Seriously, when did the culture of the big name colleges become this moronic ?

It’s been coming for quite some time but now it is here in full force.  You can just picture the idiot professors (most of them white I’m sure) sitting around congratulating themselves on identifying yet another microaggression that no one else had thought of before- and no one had complained about before either.  They will solemnly report at this at their next DEI meeting and everyone will congratulate them on how sensitive and thoughtful they are.  That now requires all the other stupid faculty at other institutions to do them one better.  Madness.  Absolute madness.

    They’re late to the party.

The University of Southern California (USC) School of Social Work and the State of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services did this in January. “Field” was probably among the words Stanford University’s Information Technology function tried to ban in December. But Stanford backed off a bit in January after being thoroughly mocked.

There are many words that have negative connotations for different people.

If the most sensitive, most irrational, and most easily offended get to remove language from the lexicon, our language will become severely constrained, we will not be able to describe things fully and accurately, and communication will become difficult and confusing. All of which will increase the likelihood of real hurt.

That these sorts of language nonsense and ready offense items seem to arise disproportionately in “social work” does not speak well of the capabilities of people involved in “social work.”

Over a decade ago I had a very positive experience with a social worker at the hospital where my mother was being treated after her final stroke. But today I’m not sure I’d trust anything coming from a social worker.
